Twycross Zoo Matadi & Bolus Update thread

Boulas has left Belfast:

At long last...:) His departure means Gugas, the younger(and genetically valuable) Silverback at Belfast will get a real chance to breed, as I believe Boulas has been suppressing him. They may still need to exchange one or two females to get things going though.

At Twycross Boulas will be 'retired' with the two older females. He is the oldest of four (full) brother Gorillas all born at Howletts- the other male 'Oumbi' being the youngest.

Id hope that Oumbi would stay at Twycross and that they'd move the female offspring on, especially if he was proven to have genetically valuable offspring with the two females.

While there is no news of any gorilla pregnancies yet, its very likely Port Lympne's arrangement in sending/loaning Oumbie to Twycross involves them claiming(at least) the first female baby for themselves. If mother-raised it would move at a later date obviously.

This is a trademark of nearly all Howletts/Port Lympne breeding arrangements with other zoos.

No confirmation but I think he would have arrived at Twycross the same or next day. If he flew, flights weren't affected until later in the week.

Thanks Pertinax:),

ive just found out im going the zoo tomorrow hopefully, so ill try and get an update on them.

thanks

He would of most likely come by road and ferry. Zoo animals are not genrally moved by air unless there is no alternitive as it's a stressful and expensive process.

If Boulas is there(which presumably he is) you'll probably find the House is closed to visitors but you can see through the windows or doors what is going on- he will probably be in the side that was Joe's half to start with.

Equally important is any news you can glean about the other(Oumbi) group and any impending patter of little Gorilla feet yet?

Boulas was being introduced to the rest of his new group yesterday so gorilla indoor viewing was closed. Managed to get a look at him though. He's amazing. Can't wait to go back once he's settled in properly

Hello,

Had a really nice day at twycross and saw both male gorillas for the first time. The new male Boulas is VERY impressive and is also HUGE. Both males though are well aware of each others presence as they both kept looking at each other and running away. Did not see much of ozala or asante as they both kept going in the off show area and unfortunately did not find out if there are any pregnancies.:(

I could not see Biddy at all whereas bongo looked very stressed out with her constant rocking and even knocking her head against the wall serveral times. There was keepers there at all times so are aware of this behaviour.

thanks
josh.

Bongo will quite likely have problems initially accepting a new male and the rocking behaviour you saw indicates that- she was originally very humanised as a baby and has never shown any inclination to breed. Biddy is much more normal and is likely to accept Boulas more quickly.

Lol yes Boulas IS impressive. I remember him hitting the glass in front of me once when I cupped my hands to see in. Scared the bejebus out of me!:P
Also on a seperate occasion he managed to throw poo on the roof once. Everyone was amazed!
Hope he enjoys his life at Twycross and settles with the group with least problems as possible!

Very unlikely to be any moves afoot- at least with Gorillas. Both places have settled groups at present.
