you'll need a big zoo to fit all those animals in

If I was to start up a zoo, I would start off with something relatively simple to take care of, such as Mara (do Mara fit in this category?).

no because mara are a reasonable suggestion :p the category appears to be very large very expensive animals that most existing zoos dont even have....

So completely inappropriate for a startup zoo then, no?

And how is brand-new zoo going to get Komodo Dragons? Or pandas? Or elephants? Seems to me the question you have answered there is 'what collection should azoo aim towards?' rather than 'how should it start?'.

I think there's two ways to start a zoo historically. The first is by starting teeny tiny with a nice petting farm and building gradually by adding maybe a small marmoset enclosure, or something simalarly low space/cash every few months or so. The second is by being a little insane and getting a pet giraffe or similarly unsuitable animal and charging people to see it until you have enough money for another ridiculous pet. Eventually you'll have a zoo either way.
Personally, I think the pet giraffe idea seems most fun, even if it is less sensible!

look ok it can go 2 ways you can have a lot of people visiting or you cant.

if you have endangered and rare animals u will get more visitors.

if you have common animals u will have less visitors.

by pandas i mean red pandas, come on guys wake up.:)

oh and by the way i'm cheetahgirls friend, cynthia, and i am writing stuff up for her (she gave me permission) so i will b covering 4 her 4 in the next 2 weeks.

Wake up? I think your the only one who needs to wake up! I take it you know the Moderators can see from where you post?

Anyway, you are going on my IGNORE list.

Cynthia: Why am I guessing that you weigh about two tonnes and have a son called Zamba? Do you also live in the Kingdom of the Wild suburb of Colchester by any chance??? ;)

In other words I think Cynthia is really the rhino at Colchester Zoo!!

ok im going to be nice and ignore the nasty comments of above. id be happy with a HUGE zoo/ elephant park! i'd have a few herds of african and indian elephants ( in separate yards) - thats when i marry the billionairre! and have treetop hides well above reach of the herds to observe them naturally. my plan is FOOLPROOF :)

this is my lighthearted response :)

And reptiles! Don't forget our scaly friends. I do know a gentleman who started off with a reptile shop and now has a small menagerie in Wales.

Servals are good if you want some sort of cat species.

A small aquarium would be a good idea, however the costs of keeping the water up to scratch are somewhat substantial when a lot of animals are concerned.

I'd agree with you on the reptiles. You can easily start off with much cheaper animals such as reptiles and still make it into a zoo. Another good way is to start off as an animal educator. Traveling around and educating the public about animals is a stepping stone to starting a zoo. We started off mostly with reptiles then later added sloths, kangaroos, eagle owls, etc.
