asiatic lions in europe

Yeah, that would be great. Maybe when we have a definate list of all the participants...?

Surely can't be that many left to go now...?

OK, does anyone know about:
The parents and year of birth of KOYLA, currently at Planckendael, born at Benidorm

Same litter as Kalinga (chessington) and her sister? 2005 maybe?

Do you know the name of this sister?

I'm not sure she's 2005 as she had cubs in 2007 at Planckendael - most likely the same parents as Kalinga though.

Hmmm I presumed Kalindi was her sister, but just checked, and she was born in 2002 at Cologne. My mistake!

There isnt much info on the lions at Terra Natura Zoo (Benidorm)

Just dug up an old news article from December 2002. Regarding the birth of a female Asiatic Lion cub at Twycross. The mother was called Khari and the father was Kamal at Bristol. The cub was named Jadzia. Any infomation on where Khari and Jadzia are now?

Khari died in around 2006, old age. She was mother to Mwamba and several other cubs at Twycross.

Unsure of Jadzia's whereabouts. I remember reading an annual report of theirs, saying that 2 females from different litters moved to same zoo. Jadzia maybe one of them.

Here some more information on Yamuna at Cologne:

Her parents were Bhagirath (father, died 2008) and Mena (mother, died, 2005). In 1991 they came from Gir Forest, India, to Zurich. According to an article they had three other children that were transferred to Berlin and to England. But it is not stated if they are still alive or not.

Kamal is still old enough to breed isn't he?

If not, then most likely one of the Cotswolds females.

He can breed but he is already well represented (Abi at London, Mwamba at Paignton and he is grandfather to the cubs at London) Cotswold's only got Gir from Dudley last year and Akela was there original female so moving either of them would be a reluctant choice. They already have Bristol's last male Chandra so Kamal can't go there either. Maybe if Bristol can move Kamal elsewhere then they can obtian another 1:1 and start breeding again?

Now that they have Ishara from Plankendael I wonder if Parken would consider retiring Sarla (born 1997 at Chester) from the breeding program? As far as I know she is post reproductive and at this stage she isn't too old for a move to Bristol.

OK, here are the adjustments I would make to 'Lions in Europe':

Kamal could be moved to Boissiere du Dore as a mate for Kalindye (if ISIS is correct with Boissiere having 0.3). I believe he is unrelated to Kalindye.
Jasraj of Zurich could be moved to Bristol, along with their off-show female Aipani.

Do say if there is a mistake.

I know it sounds a bit of a silly question, but at how can a Lion be before it can breed and when is it too old (Wanders, embarrased away...)

Males can pretty much breed up to any age (within reason!) but for females the cut off age seems to be around 13. A lion will reach maturity at 3 to 4 years old.

Does anyone know about Ilenia and Livinia from Jerusalem, both from German Zoos I think!
