i thought it was interesting to see how the elephants reacted. When tarongas calf fell into the water not that long ago the adults were in there trying to help it. But these eles let the keppers do all the work.
all is well, Mali safe and sound. There is a video to see at Yahoo!7 News on Yahoo!7 Video and if that does not work search for "elephants panic at melbourne zoo" and you should get the video that way. Looks like part of her growing up process. The keepers were being very protective earlier and not letting her near the water

I don't think that the adult elephants were allowing the keepers do all the work, it's just that the elephant were on the wrong side of the pool to help Mali. I really doubt the adult elephants would have jumped in the water on that side of the pool. If you see in the video they all ran to the shallow/beach side of the pool immediately as though they were about to jump in to help, but Mali got out just as the females got there.
the difference in taronga's incident was that the adult females were already in the beach side of the pool were the calf fell. Being a lot closer it allowed them to be in the water a lot faster to help the calf.
