Chester Zoo webcams!

Good idea though strange species to pick.

I hope the put one up for the sulawesi crested macaque there large troop would make a very entertaining view.

21:30 and I can't see anything on the flamingo cam, but the giraffes are chasing each other around their paddock. Great stuff.

10:30 and once again nothing is to be seen in the Flamingo cam apart from a duck, and there are two Giraffes out.

How late are they allowed out in the summer? And now they are at the feeding station.

22:50 just saw one of the flamingos go past the camera I didnt think they would be left outside of night incase of foxes etc

Will be interesting to see if the camera will catch the birth of the new baby when it's born (if they still have the camera running by then)

Many of Chester's animals aren't locked away at all, only those at obvious risk of predation. I've been in the zoo before 7am and a lot are out and about, for example, early morning is often the best time to see the monkey islands exhibits.

Which animals are left outside? Do you think other webcams will be introduced.

Following an incident a number of years ago with the tigers, a storm and a damaged fence all the big cats come in at night.

Id imagine it would be the same for the Chimps and Orangs aswell. would be great seeing the big cats at night though.

I could only really tell you which I've seen out at both ends of the day that would make for good webcam subjects, but they would include the black rhino, who I've seen in the paddocks as late as 8:30pm, the lion-tailed macaques who enjoy the morning and the Sulawesi crested macaques, who all troop out as darkness falls. Then of course there's the lar gibbon, who wake the whole zoo up as soon as there's a hint of daylight.

Having said that, animals don't have to be out all day to be good webcam subjects - you're not going to see much of a melanistic jaguar in the dark.

On the subject of the chimps, a couple of weeks ago they were out just after 8am enjoying their breakfast, so even if the zoo isn't open to the public, there'd still be something to see on a webcam.

Thats why they have an electric fence around the enclosure which they switch on at night!

It would be self-defeating to bring them inside at this time of year, as their nests and eggs are outside :p
The whole zoo should be fox-proof, although I don't suppose that's easy to achieve.

Intelligent flamingos? What's the world coming to? What was wrong with the old sort you could use to play croquet?

Quick update on the web cam front the flamingo cam has now been moved so that you can see the nest site and the new flamingo chick. And the Giraffe cam has been moved over so that you can see the far side of the outdoor enclosure near to where the benches are opposite the Congo Buffalo.

Both webcams can be panned and zoomed so I don't think either have moved (I'm sure the giraffe cam hasn't). I hope they pan that one back onto the building as the giraffes spend more time over there.

Update: Awww... there's the chick. ;)
