Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #2

Reminds me of working at a pig farm at 15. Giving piglets there vaccinations there rather fun to try and catch especially the last one in the stye.

I am glad Colchester has the space to keep Essex pigs and tell the story of how the breed nearly became extinct.

I guess they only have room to display one sow plus piglets at any one time though. I looked carefully at the last litter and how the white markings vary- only about three of them had what looked to me as the correct markings- broad saddle and white hind feet, I guess the rest end up as Bacon....

Dont tell the visitors that :p

We had great fun loading them piglets up lol A few had to be recaptured after escaping :D

The females will probably be kept for breeding. Having breeding sows/gilts is more important than having masses of surplus 'store boars'

As ZooLeopard said they are going to a prison farm so they might have a while if there used to give them experience of tending pigs and markings might not matter so much.

hehe
Pig attacks!

Not that that really matters! I think it's good really they're going off to a prison I wonder what they're going to be getting up to their?

BTW although not strictally a zoo their is a farm that's open to the public in Suffolk which did keep the world's largest pig which I think died there a couple of years ago. Has anyone heard of this place?
