Elephant calves

Since it's not on the website, I thought I would mention that Umoya's calf born on May 13 is a male. (Someone needs to teach Mhabu how to make girls. 5 males and 2 females sired by Mhabu plus Musi, makes it 6 male and 2 female calves from this herd.) There is one more elephant pregnant. Samba is due in January.

Sandiegomaster, I hope you are right about the Dholes. They been saying that the Dholes were going into the old Lion exhibit since before Etosha and Mbara went down to to zoo.

They said that there is no money and that those plans are currently on permanent hold so don't expect any gate between the elephant exhibits anytime soon.

I don't know who told you that, but they were mis-informed. Money is being raised for the elephant crossing at the Park, and it will be happening.

Djaeon, what level is your membership with the Society? You always seem to know what they're doing when I can't dig it out of the site or the zoonooz. Like this and that they were redesigning the Tiger Trails plans.

Oh speaking of which, have you heard anything knew about Tiger Trails? It seems to have been out of the limelight for awhile.

Otter Lord - See PM.

I did recently see the new Tiger Trail concept, and it looks great. I'm not sure how much of what I saw was final and how much was still concept though. There should be more info about that coming soon. What I saw in the new concept included a bamboo forest, reptile exhibit, 3 large tiger areas (including glass viewing areas), hoof stock exhibit, birds, interpretive/educational elements, etc. And it will be more easily accessible, as opposed to the trek it would've taken to get to the old design.

@ djaeon - Where exactly will the new tiger exhibit be? And when it opens, will they still keep tigers in the old (current) exhibit as well?

The entrance to the overall "tiger trail" area is currently slated to start just after the bridge past discovery station, that you take to go to the elephant overlook. The place where if you go left, you head up to condor ridge, if you go right, you go to the elephants and if you go straight, you end up at the current tiger exhibit.

I don't know what exactly is happening with the old tiger area, if it's getting incorporated into the new area or not.

Apparently there is a new informational exhibit at the park about conservation and the US Fish and Wildlife. It is located in the conifer forest by Condor Ridge or the proposed North America section of the park.

Check out video in the Wild Animal Park section.

So this Saturday, I'm signed up for a segway tour of the field exhibits at the Wild Animal Park. I've been anticipating this trip the last few months because the Asian field exhibits are more favorable to me than the African ones. I know some people here also feel the same way, so is there any species that you guys would want me to look for? I know many will want a species list. Also, are there any questions that you'd like to have asked?

Awesome, have fun! Just see if you can glean any information about future plans for that part of the park.

Hi Otter Lord

Yes, I have a question. When will those asian parts be open again for the public (= by journey-into-africa-bustrain)?

so is there any species that you guys would want me to look for?

I know that SDWAP used to have those Russian saiga antelope, but I'm almost certain that they've been gone for quite a while. But still, let me know if you see any of them. Thanks.

They are all gone since the 90's, it's been discussed quite a few times on various forums and confirmed by SD...

That's what I thought. I just wondered if they'd ever bring them back, since SDWAP is focusing more on this Asian area now.

I would be interested in pics of hog deer, Javan rusa deer, and Timor deer; bonus points for spotting the one Luzon sambar that ISIS lists at the park!

BTW, the subspecies of Timor Deer ( timorensis (Timor), russa (Java und Bali), macassaricus (Sulawesi) und moluccensis (Molukken) are not differentiated with regard to currently systematic.
It seems that Timor Deer has lived originally only on Bali and Java islands and later people imported this species to another islands.
