ZSL London Zoo Personal Vision Of London

I visited London Zoo last Sunday. It'd been 7 years since I'd last been and I was pleasently surprised by the number of changes they'd made.

I liked "Gorilla Kingdom" and hope all goes well for the Gorillas.

Also I saw a Southern Tamunduar mixed in with marmosets and Sloths and he climbed up the drain pipe and escaped! The keepers were there and they got him back. So I guess they'll have to make it so its harder for him to escape.

I would also like to add to my vision: a small gorup of bush dogs to the area directly in front of the black burn pavilion encompassing the thick hedges and the large oak tree in front of benches (directly opposite the mechanical clock), the enclosure would also have part of the slope down to the large bird-play area. The enclosure would be of clear shoulder height glass with hotwire running at head height (I would presume this would be enough).

My vision, rember it's personal, and if anything is unrealistic, just say rather than having a go at me.

Like many other members, my vision is based arouned Zoo-geographic zones and immersion

The education centre becomes and orang-utan and komodo dragon house, both have outdoor acsess.

The snowdon aviary becomes a mixed species exhibit with javan gibbons and langurs, and anoa on the ground.

Were everyone is putting tigers, i put sun bears

the end of teh north bnk is the tapirs

The cotton terraces

The current okapi paddock once again becomes a bongo enclosure, while the tapir enclosure becomes a pygmy hippo enclosure, the sevals replace the RRhogs, the rest od the terraces stay the same.

The clore becomes a cmpletely SAmerican exhibit with giant otters mabey even manatees (would there be space?) Along the woodland walk, a new anteater, rhea and mara enclosure built the squirell monkeys and some birds are put in the roundhouse, while other primate and a coati enclosures are built around this area.

quick edit, okapi paddock is planted thickley and becomes home to OKAPI

a jaguar enclosure is built, u will see where this is when i post my map

my vision for london zoo would be quite simple move it to a bigger site and give some of the animal enclosures some where for the animals in them to be able to escape the allday glair of the public. By this I mean put more shrubs and vegitation in all the enclosures so it makes the enclosure feel a bit more realistic
Too many zoo's look at the paying customers views and don't think too hard about the animals if the enclosures were to be more realistic then perhaps some of the animals would act as out in the wild.
I know some people will come back at me by saying you pay your money to see the animals but sometimes we all need privacy.

I actually prefer a smaller site I feel a really big site (such as chester) means visiters pay less atention in order to fill the day with everything they can. So a smaller site means people focus on the aniomals that is there and relates better to them.

Right lets start from the top of the zoo

The North BanK

The Snowdon Aviary becomes an indian Bird avairy with a name along the lines of The Indian Snowdon Aviary or India @ the Snowdon Aviary. Near the education centre a Stiped Hyena Enclosure is built and along the Main Bank Enclosures For Asiatic Lions,Honey Bagers, Axis Deer and Hanuam Langur. There Would Be An Asiatic Lion consercation centre with one Den on show

The North Bank would make An Effective Gir Forest Zone
 
Well, the problem with the Snowdon aviary is that it is listed, it's hard for them to extend it or build any heated housing for tropical species. Hence the temperate or hardy assortment of species you see there today. I think there is great potential for low-impact, heated wooden huts built on stilts within the actual aviary however, but I imagine they would still need permission for even something like this.

The North Bank is fairly narrow. I think they could get away with one, long, larger mammal or bird exhibit, but it wouldn't be much larger than the hunting dog enclosure. Remember the whole of that strip is only a couple of metres away from the public canal and the busy(ish) road the other side of the wall. Large cats would likely need to be caged rather than in open enclosures. In a way, I am surprised that the wild dogs are housed so close to the canal, but a lion exhibit on the north side definitely would generate a lot of (often unwelcome) interest from members of the public using the path on along the canal. I imagine the exhibits would need to be set back a bit, which might reduce the space available.

Its weird, I can imagine somewhere like Colchester having no problem cramming in all those species into the North Bank space, but I think London is motivated to move away from anything that makes the zoo appear cramped or small, with lots of dense planting around exhibits and a move away from cages.

ok how about i forget about the hyena and move the Axis deer enclosure down bye the education centre where the Hyena were supposed to be, would that make the north bank seem less cramped and more 'effective'?
