Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Sumatran Rhinos at Cincinnati Zoo

Presumably.
I'm not sure whether Andalas's move to Way Kambas was initiated by Los Angeles or Indonesia ...

I had the understanding that both the PHPA (Indonesian Government) and the respective US Zoos had co-ownership of the rhinos involved in the agreement.

Okapikpr, if you were talking about the old okapi exhibit across from the veldt, it is certainly gone as per the most recent google map. (After the okapi were moved, I know bongo and then yellow-backed duiker were housed here).

I was actually refering to the old okapi exhibit at the head of the Kiwi trail and the mouth of Elephant Mesa. I think the pen is near the tree kangaroos.

When were there okapis there? Is that the current Visayan warty pig kinda between the bats and wallabies? I think the tapir exhibit is as shady as any exhibit there really, and would be a good possible spot for a Sumatran rhinoceros.

It looks like a new Sumatran Rhino facility will happen sooner than later. The Cincinnati Zoo is building a new eagle exhibit...note the current eagle exhibit overlooks the Sumatran rhino pens and it would have to go to build the proposed atrium for the rhinos. Next would be the relocation of the other hoofstock in Wildlife Canyon, also wouldnt the zoo need to temporarily relocate the rhinos when they do build the atrium? The other hoofstock area is well built to support rhinos...all it would need to shade structures.

The eagle aviary overlooking the sumatran rhinos is actually a fairly good, well planted exhibit. The relocation of the rhinos could prove to be tricky, as they certainly require quite a substantial amount of shade.

The zoo does continue to have issues with eye problems. There are days the rhinos are not allowed to go out if it is too sunny, despite having the shade structures.

Are the Sumatran rhinos actually affected by eye problems or has the shaded protection from bright light managed to prevent this? Do they all suffer similarly?

The eye problems (cloudiness) prompted the construction of the shade structures in the last 5 or so years. After the shade structures were installed, keepers noticed improvements.

Just been watching Nigel Marven's rhino adventure and he was talking about the Cincinnati zoo. He mentioned about the birth of the first sumatran rhino calf to survive in captivity. He said that Emi actually gave birth to two calves. Did they both survive? Just I cant find any info at present on them.

Cheers

Yes they both are still alive.

Emi second offspring is Suci (female) and still resides at the zoo.

Emi third offspring is Harrapin (male) he moved to White Oak Conservation Centre.

Emi passed away a little while ago and plans where to use A.I. on Suci.

Am sure someone has more up to date information or dates on what I have posted. (Just being lazy right now but do have them somewhere).

Ok thanks Taun. When i looked on their website I read it as if Emi had given brith 3 times lol. What happened to Suci's sibling?

Emi did have 3 succesful births.

Andalas (male) was her first and was moved to Way Kambas (the breeding centre in indonesia).

So that is now all her 3 calfs covered and should answer your questions.

Does this now answer your questions? As am a little confused on what information you are after.

P.s. Sorry if some of the names are spelt wrong as am doing this from memory.

The Nigel Maren programme showed emi having two calves (twins)? Did they both survive?

Sorry but I don't have a clue about what you are on about, as far as am aware she has never carried twins certainly not given birth to twins.

All her surviving offspring I have mentioned already.

Maybe one of our american friends can give you more information then I do.

Emi was at least pregnant 4 times but lost each calf until Andalas was born

Like taun said, Andalas is at Way Kampas where he has impregnated a female. According to people I know that work at one of the facilities that houses Sumats, if the calf goes full term and survives this will probably allow the U.S. to import some new females to pair with Ipuh and Harry when he gets older.

Suci is still at Cincy, as is Ipuh.

Harry is currently at White Oak but that may be changing by the end of the summer. If my sources are correct he will move to another facility in Florida.

Do know something we all don't? Rosa (believe it was her) has lost the calf.

I thought I read here in Zoochat that Ratu lost her pregnancy?

EDIT: taun beat me to it.

Thanks for the reply,

I was just re-watching the programme and Nigel definatley stated there was two calves 'Emi' gave birth to. The next shot was of Emi and one calf at 8 months, though he said in the voice over that both calves were doing well. Really confused here.
