asiatic lions in europe

The lion cub that was born last week at the zoo in Nurnberg is dead. For yet unknown reasons the mother Keera stopped caring for her little one.

Olles is at LePal

So Sari will be off as she is Olles brother - can Olles breed as the other Le Pal female, Kalu, can't.

I Olles can breed then perhaps move Kalu to Bristol or Maubeuge with a non-breeding male?

And if it turns out Terra Natura have no female Sari could go there - then get Aipani from Zurich as a mate for Olles?

Photos of Arfur - the London zoo based founder of the Asiatic lion captive population

Hi
I am looking also for photos of Arfur - that is the only male lion from the Asiatic population I have not photos of - I need this for a study I am working on.
The study is on inheritance of some external characters of lions and is performed by studying those characters along the generations on pedigrees constructed with photos of the males. So Arfur is the only gap I have in the pedigree I constructed for the Asiatic lineages in Europe. Will be great to be able to fill that up
Thank you in advance

Any updates on the cubs at Magdeburg and Planckendael?

Also, still nothing on the Terra Natura female?

I think the only way to get information on her would be to go to Spain and try and get details of the park staff

I'm seriously thinking that Benidorm's female doesn't exist - ISIS lists them as having 1.1 but it also lists Chessington as having 1.0 - so perhaps they are awaiting a new female at the moment - wouldn't be completely bizarre as there a few zoos with young females (e.g. born 2008) that can soon move - like the Mulhouse litter from 2008 went to Budapest earlier this year so perhaps the Boissiere females may be heading to Benidorm. It would make sense as none of us have a clue who the female is.

Here some news on the lion cubs at Planckendael:

The remaining four are all females.

Excellent news! At least 2 zoo's will benefit from these cubs (if they all survive) I hope they make it to the UK to replace several of the older females ie: Edinburgh/Bristol/Chester

Unfortunatly Chester's new male, Iblis is a full sibling to this litter hence unless Chester can move him they aren't suitable replacements for Asha. They might be a possiblity for Edinburgh to get another 0:2 to create a new breeding group with Royal (born 2000 at Helsinki) though.....

The other 0:2 replace Kamal at Bristol....?

I keep getting mixed up with Iblis! So yeah, axe Chester out of that idea! I suppose it will be where the demand is. I can see more retirement groups being set up soon, as well as Koyla (Planckendael) being moved elsewhere to breed with a new male

Maybe Edinburgh move Royal elsewhere before Kamal (Bristol) or Ashok (at Chessington) move up there and form the UK's third (and much needed) retirement group?

Maybe Edinburgh move Royal elsewhere

I think they might well retire Royal though as he is fairly well represented with his four cubs.

Koyla (Planckendael) being moved elsewhere to breed with a new male

I'd also retire her as she'll have seven young in Europe if all goes according to plan. Will post my plan soon based around the assumption there is no female at Benidorm

Also the young females at Boissiere, Rotterdam, Zurich and London need to be moved yet - so that's nine out of that anyway.
(Boissiere females, Naui, Bente's young, Kiba, Kiburi, Kumari, Jeevana, Rubi)
