Best UK Exhibits for Smaller Unknown Animals?

Hello All,

Im starting this thread mainly just to have an idea on what peoples opinions are and even what I should look out for when I visit zoo's! Sorry if this has already been done.

Basically what I am asking is what are the best indivudual exhibits in the UK, yet with a twist, I want to know what the best individual exhibits in the UK, in your opinion, for Smaller Animals or Unknown Animals. So this may be what is the best exhibit in the UK for Mongoose, or Fox, or Cranes! Any small, unknown or less popular animal! If you want to make a point about a great exhibit then do so, I want to know your opinions!

Sorry if this is a little confusing!

Don't worry, I know what you mean :). Personally, I like the Tsavo walk-through aviary at Chester and Rainbow Landings at Edinburgh.

I completely agree with that!

@Javan Rhino: Once again I completely agree, I also like some of Edinburghs Lemur enclosures eg. Blue Eyed Black Lemurs!

Unfortunatly, I don't remember seeing the lemurs there. We visited on the way to St. Andrews, so we got there at about 12ish and left at about half 4 to avoid the traffic, so I made for the unique things, such as the penguin pools and koalas.

Awww, shame! They have quite an extensive Lemur collection and the Blue Eyes at to die for! They are the only primate (apart from Humans) to have blue eyes!

I think the Red Panda exhibits at both the Welsh Mountain Zoo and Galloway Wildlife Park are fantastic!

I like the European souslik enclosure at Edinburgh, as well as the enclosure for north American tree porcupine, and the enclosures in the magic forest :)

Red panda and Tree porcupine enclosures at Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park-spacious with proper trees and many climbing structures.
Maned wolf enclosure there's pretty spacious too.
All otter and owl enclosures at Chestnut centre are really great(particuarly the Giant Otters)
Oh and the penguins at Blackbrook!:D

I seem to remember that the Hagenbeck line of Mandrills has blue eyes. Can someone on here can confirm that?

one blue eye!

Ahh but thats not persistent through out the whole species, that is quite simply an out-throw, or an outcast if you will. What I am trying to say is that is not normal for the species. Where as Blue Eyes is normal for Blue Eyed Black Lemurs and Humans!

Personally I think they are quite scary.

EDIT: Aswell that apes eyes are both a different colour.

I love lemur woods at the Yorkshire wildlife park. The trees are so high, and even though it's a new exhibit it's the best one I've seen. So much space and lots of aces for them to go if they want privacy

Thanks Paix for your May comment, I built the red panda enclosure at Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park, Scotland & young pandas were sent on the breeding programme to Welsh Mountain Zoo & are now being transferred out to Europe to expand the conservation gene pool, 1 to France & 1 to Belgium last month.
Also ta to the later poster on thread who complimented the porcupine and maned wolf enclosures. Both have bred at GWCP.
Good thread!

I quite like the Aardvark enclosure at Blackpool and also the Warthog and Banded Mongoose at Chester although its not the best its still very unique i have not seen many collection's do this!

Birmingham nature centre's coati enclosure, lynx enclosure and rodent house are all very good.

The new(ish) madagascan exhibit for narrow striped mongoose/crowned lemurs at Newquay is very good. as it the unsuaul carpathian lynx enclosure, and fishing cat enclosure.

At Chester the warthog/mongoose enclosure was very good as is the primate islands.

at London it would be the giant tortoise exhibit.

I would be interested to know where the best fossa enclosure is in the UK?

Jersey Zoo's First Impressions with the Andean Bears, Coatis, Howler Monkeys and Otter is good, especially the indoor part which is blended into the enclosure.

Cotswold has a nice Red Panda exhibit and a great Wolverine enclosure, as well as the lemur walkthrough with the Sifaka.

Dudley also has a nice lemur walkthrough.

West Midlands Safari parks Aye Aye/Fruit Bat/Pacu exhibit is fantastic.

Good thread!

Welsh Mountain Zoo received a red panda from GWCP which was formerly Wildlife Park Kirkcudbright in the year 2000. Meanwhile, GWCP have subsequent breeding efforts which have been successful, since 2003, all youngsters transferred to Marwell, Dudley, and Belfast. Recently, twins have moved to France and Holland as part of the EEP breeding programme.
