Chester Zoo My Chester Zoo Visits

Lol, I meant just stating the possibilities. So long as they don't cause this beautiful creature any pain/discomfort I'm happy :). I don't know where he came from, sorry.

Malindi is a female, I do have where she came from but cannot seem to find it.

She is also only 4/5 so not even fully grown yet.

Ooops, my mistake (Like I say, I don't know my rhino IDs at Chester, just know a few names).
Milandi should be just reaching the minimum ages for sexual maturity now then (4-7 years old). Also, this is from the Rhino research centre website:

The East African Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis michaeli) prefers highland forest and savanna habitat. It also has a longer, leaner, and curved horn and it’s skin is more grooved.

Maybe that helps with our little question about the 'ribbing' effect.

Well, I haven't really;) as I'm still unsure what causes it- whether its genetic or lack of (previous) good skin care, or another cause. Where did Malindi come from?

Malindi was born on 3/11/05 at Magderburg Zoo. She arrived at Chester in September 2008. She is well known for her wrinkles! :D

Another 'zoo' rhino then. It is only speculation but I tend to think it is the result of previous less satisfactory enclosures, leading to dryer skin- same as can be seen in some elephants.

So you think it is like cracked skin then? That is definately a possibility since the skin looks very 'rough' (even for a rhino). However, that article on the Rhino centre website suggests that it is just something that some individuals in that subspecies has.

I think most black rhinos in zoos are of the Eastern subspecies.
Most of the rhinos I've seen (or got photos of) that were like this have lighter greyish skin and the distinctive 'ribbed' effect is more prominent. I suspect this appearance is the result of poorer skin care.

Was at the zoo this morning from about 9:45 to 12:10

Went straight to the Okapi at ten, Dicky and Stuma were inside together but were seperated at probably around 20 past as Stuma was being rather stubborn. It was relatively quiet in there with me, my dad, a keeper, someone who I believe is probably a zoochatter, and of course Dicky and Stuma. No sign of the Duiker.

Other than that not an awful lot to report really - it was rather quiet at the zoo today, probably due to a certain football match this afternoon.

I'm at Chester again on Friday

I get that feeling sometimes, he's on zoochat, that persons on zoochat, and even though I have no proof whether they are on Zoochat or not, I just get a feeling.

Ive been at Chester quite a few times when I am sure I have talked and seen Zoochat members...

Hehe

If you were at Chester Zoo this morning, talked to the woman in the weird wig at opening time, showed me the photos you took of Kirana and was having a chat with an Okapi keeper some time between 10 and 10:30 before your phone went off, please come forward :D

I'm gonna try and get to Chester Zoo on 10/07/10 (will put on this for definate nearer the time). If anybody is there that day and spots me (the jesus dude holding the owl in the photo) then feel free to come over and say hi :), would be good to meet you.

I'm not there on the tenth, but I'm there on the eleventh.

Like I say, this isn't set in stone and the 11th is equally possible. If I don't go on either of them dates I will try for 31/07/10.

I'm getting a membership just before Christmas as an early present (probably start of December), so will be there alot more next year.

It's well worth it - if you visit as often as me it is fantastic value.

Me and my girlfriend go enough to make it worth it (getting a joint one). My mum and dad work at Chester races, so this will be where we visit most often cause they can drop us off. We can even cover it over two days on a few occasions. Other than that there will be festive fun, new year, my birthday and when we will have been together 4 years. There'll probably be more times than that, it's such a great place :D

I've got the Colchester card, and it's been well worth the money. This year I've been able to visit Chester, marwell, twycross and Bristol on it, which I'd never have been able to do without it.

Brill :). Out of interest, it mentions discount into other UK zoos. Can anybody tell me which zoos are included?
