Interesting walk-thru exhibits

What interesting/unusual walk-thru exhibits (that is, animals can go into visitors space) do you know?

Bird aviaries and bird halls are very common. What else?

Which zoos have walk-thru hoofed animals? I know of blackbuck in big area of forest in Beekse Bergen.

Monkey Jungle in Miami, Florida has a walk-through Amazon exhibit which houses Bolivian Squirrel Monkeys, Black-capped Capuchins, and Red Howler Monkeys.

G'day siamang27 - are those species all in the exhibit together or are there barriers seperating the species?

I went through a vulture walk-through in France, I think it was Doué and they also had a barbary macaque walk-through.

Many zoos have lemurs including Edinburgh, Whipsnade, Jerusalem, Skansen in Stockholm, Cotswold Wildlife Park - I'm sure there are more.

I didn't like the one in Stockholm as you are walking through a caged area rather than an open woodland or meadow and I found it a bit intimidating. Edinburgh's is amazing in my view and I liked Whipsnade too.

London has squirrel monkeys.

At the Skansen Aquarium there's a neat little rainforest-walktrough with white faced saki's and cottontop tamarins, since it is an indoor enclousure it's pretty small but well built and it looks really nice.

I forgot about that one, I didn't go properly inside as I'm a bit scared of monkeys!

The New Forest Wildlife Park has a large walk-through section with fallow and sika deer. Many are tame and will let the visitors stroke them. :)

-Macropod exhibits with emus, pretty common

-I am pretty sure the Singapore Zoo has a walk-thru with Red Shanked Douc Langurs. Also maybe one with orangutans too? I am not exactly sure on this though, but this is what I perceived from an episode of what it's like on Jack Hanna's "Into the Wild".

-Muntjac Deer: Dartmoor
-Pudu: I am pretty sure the Jacksonville Zoo has pudu deer in their aviary that freely roam.

Singapore doesn't have a walk-through exhibit with Douc Langurs; they are kept in an island exhibit, a great one with tall poles and a lot of climbing opportunities.

As to the Orangutans, it is not a walk-through exhibit but the boardwalk for the public and the branches on which the apes swing and hang out on are very close. Of course only docile females and babies are on this island, possibly young males too, but not adult males. Some of the females and youngs are allowed to climb out of the exhibit a few times a day via a special pole to have fruit from their keepers in front of the exhibit. Visitors can have their photos taken with the orangutans or in front of them, but it is a very natural, calm and beautiful affair; not a show on stage as they once had. The bond between the apes and the keepers is aparent and amazing. I'd nominate Singapore's orangutan exhibit as one of the best zoo experiences I have ever had.

My photos in the gallery will show the Orangutan feeding very well.

@Baldur: Thanks for clearing that up for me! I would have to agree Singapore looks like a great zoo experience. I think after I see San Diego I will have to go to Singapore!

Does newquay zoo's new madagascan walktrhough just feature the lemurs as a walkthrough or are the narrow striped mongoose, vasa black parrots and partridges also part of the walkthrough?

Thanks you in advance

Doesn't singapore have a walk-through with tree kangaroos, lemurs, sloth, mouse deer and birds all together?

Yes it's called the Fragile Forest, I forgot about that one - I went there a few years ago. It's almost like a large aviary and there are also butterflies, iguanas and I'm sure I remember a tamandua.

It's a good exhibit but a bit of a mish-mash in terms of zoogeographical accuracy!

The tamandua has been taken out - apparently because it's a good escape artist! The lone female Goodfellow's tree kangaroo has recently been removed from the Biodome as well, not sure why.

The Singapore Zoo also had a reptile walk-thru with Green Iguanas (in the past there were small snakes but theft became an issue), but it's been temporarily closed to create a holding area for a troop of Squirrel Monkeys which are destined for the new River Safari park in 2012. The monkeys will be housed in a walk-thru exhibit.

Night Safari Singapore has 2 walk-thrus, one for Flying Fox and another for Giant Flying Squirrels.

Auckland Zoo has an exhibit called "Aussie Walkabout" which has kangaroos, wallabies, emus etc.
