Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens Jacksonville Zoo News

I had just went to the Jacksonville Zoo today and there is some news:
-Kilpspringer, Southern Screamer and Kori Bustard are now found at the Rift Valley Aviary
-The Grevy Zebra pair are now in the same exhibit next to the Okapi exhibit who are still seperated.
-Rock Hyraxes are now back in the avairy next ot the elephant exhibit
-Lanuage of Conservation is found all around the zoo
-Saddle billed Storks are located in Giraffe Overlook

With JaxElephants updates ( moving animals with others) could this mean The Jacksonville Zoo is now readying itself for the long planned hippo exibit? the last time hippos were here was late 70`s or early 80`s as I remember it.

The zoo is most likely to make the Tiger Exhibit as part of Monsoon Asia and the new gibbon exhibit, plus other animals first. Sadly they said they haven't got the funds for it yet though. But they might build Hippo River first though due to money issue.

I found the Masterplan on the CLR design site:
CLR Design - Evolutionary Thinking in Habitats : Architecture ? Landscape Architecture ? Exhibit Design
(Goes to the side of plans and then go over to Jacksonville Zoo and then click it and zoom on the plan)
It shows that the African Exhibit will expand and Mantee River will be added to the plans aswell as Hippo River and Monsoon Asia.

I believe the Manatee River exhibit got axed for the forseeable future as the state didn't want to expand the Manatee rehab program.

I am afraid this sets a "bad example" as following the recent oil disaster they will quickly have to rethink their approach to rehab with loads of oiled birds, manatees and other wildlife.

Here is an interesting video of the Jacksonville Zoo with the new director talking about the zoo:

Some other news that I forgot to add:
-New elephant signs
-No more muntjacs at the zoo now
-No more Sitagungas at the zoo now
My thoughts about the Kilpspringers in the Rift Valley Aviary is that I like them being in the Giraffe Overlook exhibit alot better. They seem to better fit on the kpoje provided by the zoo then in a forest where they are currently found.

I have gone to the zoo today with some updates :)
-Note:Today was in the high 90's so most of the animals were in shade cooling down
-In the Saddle Billed Stork exhibit in the Rift Valley Aviary, Crested Screamers are living there.
-Also the zoo added bamboo to the aviary and the amur leopard exhibit.
-Salsa and Onca are back in the Bigger Jaguar exhibit with the pool but it has no fish.
-A lone male Jaguar has the smaller exhibit and looks like Harry and mom had seperate.
-The female Kudu are back in the rhino exhibit with a new breeding male.
-Twiga, last year baby giraffe has gone to a different zoo already :(. But the new calf was on exhibit today without Duke(Father).
--There is now a third Grevy's Zebra at the zoo so there was a pair together and a loner in the back in the holding pen.

I'm not sure why they wanted a new male. They seperate the females from the zoos collison of 3 males since they didn't want more babies. Now they introduced the females with this new male, most likely for a larger gene pool with the herd.

I got some more updates everybody:
-Kori Bustards are in a exhibit only seen from the Train, it is between the cheetahs and the big field exhibit.
-One of the Grevy Zebra at the zoo is pregnant :)
-Ty the youngest white rhino at the zoo left the zoo today for Mexico. :(
-The zoo's oldest black bear had pass away sadly leaving her son alone.
-The zoo added a beehive for enrichment for the animals(honey)
-The Saddle Billed Stork exhibit has a Marabou Stork in it.
-Stanely Crane are now living with the Okapi.
-The zoo's lonely Lion Tail Macaque lives in the Lion's Barn and the zoo is looking for a home for him but is unsuccessful.
-The Zoo lost its Greater Siren
-The zoo is going to redo Africa section since it is getting old.

Which Mex zoo did Ty the rhino go to?

I went to the zoo once again and here are the update ;)
-Wattled Cranes are now found in the old Saddle Billed Stork exhibit in the Rift Valley Aviary
-A new bird species(sign wasn't up) is found in a seperate aviary in the Rift Valley Aviary
-Its mating season for the rhinos now ;)
-The Stanely Crane are now in the Okapi enclosure and the zoo place a branch(on a rope) to lure the Okapi closer to the visitor(it work, sadly I didn't bring my camera :( )
-I heard there is a new Giant Otter at the Zoo
-I had the best elephant experince at the zoo today, one of the females dug a mud hole and she would place water into the hole and stir it and then spray on her, she did this a few of times. Then I went back to the exhibit after 2-3 hours to see her do it again but the hole was knee deep(Elephant knee). After that she stood on one of the Iron Cables to get a plant that was close by. This was certainly my favorite Elephant experince :D
-Like I said before, I had many great photo experinces like the elephant, okapi, a kilpspringer in the aviary, also the camian lizards were nose to nose. (Sadly no Camera)
-One of the Grevy's Zebra should be due anytime now as she was laying under the tree the whole time when I was there. I can't wait to see the baby zebra once it is born.(Mother is Eclipse)
-A blue billed Curassow was had to be removed from the aviary(in ROJ) for being to curious and getting to close to the people.
