Blackpool Zoo Gorilla pregnancy

I was at the zoo at the weekend and there was much mating between the male and one of the females. (Not Maliki obviously).

That's very interesting. So at least one of the other two(probably) isn't pregnant yet (though they will mate during pregnancy sometimes, frequent mating indicates otherwise). I'm a bit surprised the other two didn't become pregnant when Miliki did.

I was up there on Monday, I dont have any photographic proof as the mother lay the baby on the floor, well it sure is,nt a boy, I asked a keeper and he confimed what I saw. They might announce it on there Facebook page soon. Everybody,s asking the same question.

Oh, I see...:) Confusion over the sex of baby Gorillas is quite frequent and Blackpool haven't had experience of a baby before.

Lets wait to see what happens then...

Well if there is mating in the gorilla enclosure then there will soon be more gorillas that could be female.

So even if it is male, better luck next time Pertinax!:D:cool:

They did a pregnancy test on one of the other females, but she,s not pregnant. They did it last week.

It would be interesting to know which female that was- Kena or Njema, and what the situation for the third female is.

I,ve no idea yet, this afternoon I managed to get a photo of her on her mums back just before the dad took it off the mum and it was a good 5 minutes before she got her back. All the females were chasing him.

That is NOT GOOD!!!! This baby is far too young to be manhandled or taken by its father (that's pretty unusual anyway)- as they are still very delicate at this stage. Also, placing a baby on her back, or on the floor, so young is an indication of Miliki's inexperience(it is her first obviously) or that her maternal care is slipping. They will have to seperate Bukavu if there is any repetition as its a serious risk to the baby.

I believe Ivy was born at Twycross . The male is one of 2 young ones imported a couple of years ago as Ivy had not bred with her long-term partner - possibly from Zurich .
