Chester Zoo Elephant Birth at Chester!

So thats Sithami left, Thi right and Jangoli behind.

Im pretty sure it's Sithami on the right and Thi on the left. Sithami has tushes which are clearly not visable on the elephant on the left. Also Thi has a lump on her leg.

Thi is the smallest of the adult female elephants, hence why I believe she is on the right and also seems to have a patch of dense hair on her head.

Well in that case im not sure all i can say for sure its one of them haha also 99.99% sure its Jangoli in the background.

Thi is the smaller of the older females. Sithami is still smaller and is the animal on the right here. The other animal is Thi. This has been the regular setup since the baby was born. Thi one side, Sithami the other and not letting him venture much further from between them.

It is interesting to see how much more of a single family unit the herd have become with the arrival of this little one. The dynamics of the herd are developing with every calf and I think it's very evident this time just how bonded they now are.

Thanks for confirming that PT123 that is what I thought. This picture was taken today and shows the same positioning that you spoke about. You can see Sithami on the right and Thi on the left.

There you go then, Chester need to update their boards then.

Well considering this is Mum and Grandmother am not surprised they are close together like this, Hopefully Thi will have a female to keep this nice close nit family group going.

The boards are out of date. They were made when Sithami was not considered an adult cow.

I think everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for a female from Thi!

Last time I believe everything I read at the zoo then! :P

Also can you also see that Thi (Elephant on the left?) seems to have full breasts? indicating possible milk present?

Could it be possible that her impending birth is the reason she is showing this? Or is it possible that the birth has stimulated her to produce milk?

Its interesting how these two are showing very much the same 'tight unit' behaviour here as when Sithami had Sundara. That time Thi had lost her own calf and Sundara frequently suckled from both females, in fact Thi partially took over the calf. Hopefully Thi's own birth will mean they both have a calf this time around.

But why Nayan? It still doesnt make sense to me! Although I must admit I like the name, I just dont understand the reason behind it!

Very tight, infact Sithami left the calf in her mothers (Thi) capable hands while I watched them today, it was only a few minutes but Thi never left Nayan side.

Sheba also was interested in the little one, only one I saw not interacting with the little one of the majority of the heard was Mya! There was a great moment when the whole herd (apart from Mya) were around the little guy when he was taking a break on the enclosure floor.

Saw him today, closely guarded by mum and grandma. Often surrounded by four females, they are certainly protective of him. Thi's baby is expected at the end of August.

I visited on Friday and he was always being protected by three or four females at any one time. It was nice to see the herd showing so much concern for the new addition.

We were told that by the last mating seen it would be in six months but the hormone measurements suggest sooner, however the faecal measurements are less reliable than the blood they used to take when they had contact.
