asiatic lions in europe

That's great news, I guess Jasraj will have to go then. Berlin, Budapest, or Dvur Kralove would all be possible destinations atm as none of them have males. Maximus, Boris and Basil could go to Dvur Kralove, Budapest, Berlin or Dublin depending which one Jasraj goes to.

Any news on the cubs at Planckendael (names/progress), and Magdeburg (genders/names/progress)

2010 definately seems to be the year for asiatic lion cubs!

Also it was announced that Abi (London) was on heat last week so she may also be pregnant.

It's all good news.

And are we still yet to find out of the Benidorm female? I think possibilities are the Helsinki female from 2005, Jasdon who was at Rotterdam and Bente's sister.

And I assume that Bente lost her litter.

Bente had a second mating in March (according to pictures on Flickr) so she may have cubs.
I havent seen any updates photos from rotterdam though (well since May) so unsure if the entire pride is still together or whether Bente has been sectioned off.

The Magdeburg cubs are receiving names in August, and there is a competition to name the Zurich cubs. No update on the names of the Planckendael cubs.

We are still yet to know the names of the the girls at Boissiere du Dore or anything about the female at Benidorm.

I've now put these questions on the Facebook pages of Terra Natura Benidorm and Zoo Boissiere du Dore

@Nisha, did they not even give you any details of the female? I guess we ought to keep trying as we're so close and it would be a shame not to complete the database.

UPDATE: I've had a go at e-mailing the park myself, let's hope this one goes according to plan and we finish the database!

I was told more or less that the information was none of my business and they wouldn't give it out.

This is my plan to try and create more breeding pairs. It's the end of 2011 and for this we assume that Mwamba and Indu at Paignton have had no success in breeding and that the age gap between Iblis and Asha at Chester was just too great for them to ever have a litter.

Step one: Asha is moved to join the current three (they are all still alive in this plan) at Edinburgh Zoo. To save her from being bullied she is alternated on the main exibit and is never in with both Gita and Kamlesh at the same time.

Step two: Indu at Paignton (Asha's full sister) is moved to Chester as a new mate for Iblis.

Step three: 0:2 of the current cubs at Planckendael are sent to Paignton as new mates for Mwamba.

Step four: Kamal (Bristol) has died by this time and Bristol are without lions. The young male at Zurich is moved over and joined by Rubi from London soon after to create a new pair.

Step five: Ashok (Chessington) is retired from breeding and leaves to form a currently non breeding group at Dublin. Dublin will then have 1:3 unless one or more of the sisters are assigned elsewhere before moving there.

Step six: Maximus at London goes to Chessington as a new mate for Kalinga.

Finally!
Step seven: Twycross have built there new exibit and are ready to house lions once again. They are assigned Boris and Basil from Helsinki on a tempaory basis. Once a mate for either can be sourced then one will be sent on to another zoo.

Lots of ifs and but's, but what do you think?

New Female at Bristol

There is a new female at Bristol Zoo, anyone know who this is?

Sorry, going to do a direct copy of what I wrote on the 'New girl in town' thread:

The new lioness is Shiva, she is 5 years old and originally from Bescacon Zoo in France. She is said to be important to the breeding programme as she has not yet had cubs, and the zoo are hoping Kamal and her breed.

The two lions are already mixed together and are said to be getting along fine.

This now leaves 1.1 at Bescacon Zoo, 3 year old Tejas and Lady (Shiva's mother?)

Exciting times, another potential breeding pair!!

I'm surprised they separated Tejas and Shiva, looked like they had a potential to be a successful breeding pair. I have my doubts they'll breed but I suppose they'll give it a try.

No joy e-mailing Benidorm, will try at Helsinki and Rotterdam as I think the Benidorm female is probably 'Xylitol' or 'Jasdon'

I think its a good move, as if they would have moved Lady over here, give her two years and she would not be in a breeding position due to age, and means another lion/collection to find a retirement home for. At least with Shiva there is breeding potential both now, and when Kamal dies. All in all, a good move!

A male would be ideal since the previous litter where all girls, added to this with Rotterdams female cub, and Planckendael's 4 female cubs.... its seems the majority of cubs born in the last 2/3 years have been female.

Litter's so far in 2010

Magderburg - 0:0:2, born 13th May 2010
Plankendael - 1:4:0 born April 2010, 1:0 DNS

DNS - Did not surivive
NSC - No surviving cubs

Have I missed a litter off?

The Zoo de la Boissiere du Dore young females are called Shaya and Talli. I'm about to do my masterplan...

Xylitol from Helsinki is at Tallinn, so I think I'm just about prepared to say that Benidorm's girl is Jasdon.
