Closed ZooChat Advertisements

Does anyone ever read the advertisements on the upper right hand side of the ZooChat pages?

Possibly not, or you would have read a regular ad calling on us to subscribe to a site called ZoosAreJails.com.

On a zoo enthusiast forum?

I brought this to Sim's attention privately last week but didn't get a reply so perhaps no-one cares?

Well Steve you must have the eyes of an eagle as I never saw that I guess it's just an over-sight

Another benefit of being a subscriber no Advertisements maybe that's why it was missed by Moderators and Sim??

If it's a Google Adsense ad (I can't see them either) then specific advertisers can be blocked in the Google admin portal.

But should we, as forum participants, have to do the blocking or should material that is contrary to the purpose of the forum not be blocked automatically? Or by the forum owner?

I understand that the forum owner needs the income generated by these ads but surely he must have some control over them? That is why I don't block them and sometimes click on to some of them as each click can mean a few cents for Sim.

The absolute master of generating income from his internet activities is Peter Dickinson. He does have very firmly entrenched principles and would not allow any ads that are contrary to those principles.

Thus it surprises me that this particular ad is allowed to continue on ZooChat.

The point I was making (above) is that the publisher, in this case the forum owner, can block specific AdWords advertisers. However, the problem is knowing who to block. It is possible to pro-actively block obvious candidates, but there would be now way of knowing ahead of time that a small, amateurish site nobody had ever heard of was suddenly going to purchase some space.

As you brought this to Sim's attention, I too am surprised the ad is allowed to continue, but that really is his choice.

Busy websites must generate revenue, even if the goal is simply to break even, which is why it would be a huge problem (across the whole of the Internet) if everyone employed widespread ad-blocking. At least here we have the option of supporting the site in other ways.

Up to my eyeballs in stuff at the moment. Also looking for some staff to help me with my work so that I can get caught up with everything and spend more time doing things I actually enjoy like hanging out on ZooChat :(

I do care - and I do block adverts that I think are inappropriate, just haven't had a chance to follow up on that email you sent yet.

Google adverts are personalised and selected from a large pool - it is conceivable that you might never see the same adverts that someone else sees.

You need an **********, Steve. I've never seen the ads in the top right corner. :)

Thanks for your support :(

The adverts I show on ZooChat along with the ZooChat Supporter subscribers help pay for the growing costs of hosting this website.

I do show all adverts to myself so that I can monitor exactly the kind of thing that Steve is concerned about. I haven't seen the advert myself, so I wasn't aware of it until Steve brought it to my attention.

Sim - I'll subscribe when I have the money. My girlfriend and I have been going through the wonderful troika of living out of our parents' houses, relying on Centrelink/casual jobs and trying to study full-time for the past year and a half.

As for ad-blockers - I'm pretty sure that mine is fully integrated into my virus software. If I had the expertise and inclination, I could probably turn it off - but I wouldn't know how.
