Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2010

been to twycross today , got a couple of good glimpses of the baby , it looked very well and was clinging to mum and feeding , the rest of the group were very relaxed and no one was bothering mum and baby , she was running around at feed time very confidently with baby holding on her front , tried to find a keeper to find out more but the weather was really bad i think there was only us around !

Thanks everyone for the update and information regarding the baby. :D
Sorry it took me so long to reply, ive been in weymouth on holiday.

Josh.

I think its Zoospeak for a pathway along the back of the outdoor elephant enclosure.

Interesting they are linking it up with Sri Lanka as a theme, though their elephants mostly came from Burma....;)

The whole area beyond the elephant paddock has often been referred to in zoo literature as the 'Sri Lankan Experience' - including the planned new exhibits for Asian Lions and Dhole.

Also not Sri Lankan.

I wonder if they'll install a life-like recreation of a tamil village being massacred along the meandering path.....

Now that's not nice.....:D

It does seem they are creating another themed exhibit here similar to the Borneo Longhouse area- but again the species being exhibited aren't matching the theme properly. They should have species such as Leopard and Sloth bears, not Asian Lions and Dholes if they want to do it properly, though I appreciate its not too easy to make such drastic changeovers.

Actually the part they are opening on wednesday is only the footpath round the otherside of the Elephant enclosure with all the wonderfull themeing that goes with Elephanys in Sri Lankan, when the Carnivora bit gets done i guess will be sometime after the zoo applys for and gets planning permisssion to start building it!

Yes I realise the Lions/dholes hasn't even been started yet. Is it likely to be put back longer now?

You can now also view the Wader Aviary from inside the toilets of Himalaya as they have now removed the self-adhesive frosting from the windows. The only bird a saw was a wild Grey Wagtail that cannot now get out of the Aviary! You cannot see the whole Aviary from the Toilets just a small pool,to see the main pool you have to be in the conference room.

The zoo have announced on their twitter page that 5 capybara have recently been born. :)
There last baby was only born 3/4 months ago.

How have they managed to get a press release on the BBC website for opening a path??

BBC Website said:
Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire opens the first in the world themed Sri Lankan elephant walkway and habitat - named 'Uda Walawe'.

The brand new £1 million home, for five Asian elephants, was officially opened by Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in July 2010.

For a start 'the first Sri Lankan themed elephant walkway' is a bit contrived!

Secondly, are we to assume the £1m price tag includes the rest of the complex as well, whcih has been open for ages? There's no way that the actual new area cost £1m unless there's some major works that aren't visible involved (if it did then should have got a couple more quotes!).

Are there actually any Sri Lankan animals in the zoo at all?

Certainly not mammal-wise (elephants and leopards are the closest and in both cases Twycross' animals are not the right subspecies): [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mammals_of_Sri_Lanka]List of mammals of Sri Lanka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Quick scan of the bird list ([ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Birds_of_Sri_Lanka]Category:Birds of Sri Lanka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]) suggests a grand total of 2 - Purple Heron and Little Egret, neither of which are exactly Sri Lankan specialties!

(let me know if I've missed any)

Twycross' collection of non-endotherms is more or less nonexistent so that's your lot!

Makes you wonder why they even chose a Sri Lankan theme. Were there any specific bequests/donations for this project? Perhaps some money came from someone with a connection to the area. I'm looking forward to the South Georgia themed part of the zoo, which will contain bonobos, moose, and wallabies.
