Chester Zoo Elephant Birth at Chester!

Last night Jangoli and Maya were separated from the others, Sheba, Sithami, Thi and Sundara were all with Nayan. Maya and Jangoli were still outside.
Someone said Upali would be fine with Nayan but he and Thi really like each other and he'd be trying to mount her and she's not up to that!

however the faecal measurements are less reliable than the blood they used to take when they had contact.

Can't they still take a blood sample through the bars, or does the new regime not allow for that sort of contact?

Incidentally, did Mick Jones, the previous Elephant team leader, retire do you know?

I believe they take blood through the ears? Im sure they still take blood samples on protected contact.

I can't remember who said it but that's definitely what someone said, maybe they can take blood if absolutely essential but don't do it on a regular basis.

Presumably it still requires close management/co-operation by the Elephant etc and so goes against the general principals of this form of contact management- unless its a vital situation.
