AdelaideNow... Adelaide Zoo's newest baby needs a name
WEIGHING not even a kilogram, this baby siamang clutching mum is Adelaide Zoo's newest primate.

But this little monkey has a big problem - he's nearly three months old and still doesn't have a name. So the zoo is inviting Sunday Mail readers to suggest names via adelaidenow.com.au

The person who suggests the chosen name - and a friend - will be taken behind the scenes to see the siamang baby and his family.

Assistant curator of mammals Emma Yengi said the more exotic the name, the better.

"Siamangs originate from Indonesia and Malaysia, so we would like his name to reflect his origin," she said.

The baby has clung to mum Suli (both pictured) since his birth on January 6, but is expected soon to start exploring his enclosure on his own.

Ms Yengi said the birth of the miniature ape was "a bit of a surprise" for zoo staff because father Irian had a broken arm when the baby was conceived.

"Irian was a bit lonely so it was decided that Suli should be brought up to keep him company," she said. "They didn't want him to stress his arm too much so they put her in the exhibit next to him so that they could see each other through the mesh."

Ms Yengi said they were surprised to learn Suli was pregnant with a baby boy. "This is the first baby for Suli and she's an excellent mother," she said. To name the Siamang, simply visit adelaidenow.com.au

Entries close on April 9 with a winner chosen by zoo staff on April 10.

He or she will be contacted by the zoo, with the winning name to be announced on adelaide.now.com.au and in the Sunday Mail.

Good question. Surprisingly, I couldn't find anything on their own website about the name, and it took a while searching to dig it out of the internet universe, but the baby's name is Zane (or "Zain", spelling is variable between posters)

Interesting. Most zoos in Aus call their animal names from their respective countries (ie Elephants at Taronga)

But, I can stick with Zane, its a cool name!
