Chester Zoo Sad News

The Duiker has passed away. It happened last week, keepers are not sure why. They are awaiting results of post mortem.

Huh, I'm simply posting what I was told. Is there a protocol for this kind of thing?

No its perfectly okay.:) You just happened to be the person who broke the bad news which several members on here had heard about but hadn't announced. It was bound to come out sooner or later.

You will find that very often certain members know the news before it breaks ,they haven`t posted it for various reasons,so if you weren`t told not to post it by the person that told you then no harm done just go for it!
There is plenty of other news that will not have come out Chester or any other zoo in the country for that matter that some people on here will already know but haven`t posted.

I was told by someone I know not connected to the zoo, therefore did not post the information as I didn't know it was public knowledge. However as Zoogiraffe said if a keeper told you then its fine you have posted this now on the forums.

I probably should not have posted my previous comment, I apolgise for that but have been waiting for this news to come out on the forums.

Yes, I'm just a regular member who was chatting to the keeper today. I thought I'd best post this as I know the Duiker has been spoke about quite a lot on the forums and one of my main aims today was to see it (I haven't before).

Very sad, and just as it was settling in too. It stopped eating and deteriorated very quickly. They hope to get another but I'm not sure it's as easy as that.

Very sad indeed. I never got to see her, which is a real shame (I looked out often enough but she always eluded me). Hopefully Chester can get another, but as has been said before it will not be easy.

I agree with zoogiraffe and others , it is also worth bearing in mind that sometimes information is given out by keepers to the public in all innocence not knowing their information will be posted on forums.
This information may or may not be sensitive , but in some cases the zoo involved may not wish the information to be posted to the public until it is made official. In some cases zoos have informed staff not to divulge information for this very reason. It might also be that the zoo has not made any effort to pass on to the staff the sensitivity of any information , meaning that the staff are unaware of the situation themselves. Just be sure to ask if the information is fine to post/ or can be told to others first to avoid any problems or confusion .

I have been asked on many occasions not to post the information I have recieved from my local zoo, as this could rightly cause cofusion.
On this occasion if it was not on the official site then I would not have passed on the death of the animal I would have p/m the people I know that use the zoo.
This way ity informs others with out putting it in the main forum.

I think one of the problems with Chester is that so little is actually released through official channels. There's little enough good news announced on the website, let alone any bad news. The only news items on the site seem to be either promoting zoo activities or a very rare animal-related announcement. 4 or 5 news items a month just isn't enough. I'd prefer something like Edinburgh's excellent website which actually contains up to date information.
I don't know whether the lack of news is down to not having an appropriate member of staff available to post items to the site, or due to a touch of paranoia about releasing bad news, but I personally believe that a steady stream of news - good OR bad - makes people feel more involved and interested in the zoo, and makes them more likely to visit to see what's new.
I doubt I'd be as interested in many of the animals and exhibits at the zoo without Zoo Days, for example. I like to know animals' names and know a bit about their personalities and histories. I also enjoyed seeing the work that the keepers do. zoo Days did a very good job of highlighting how much thought goes into caring for the animals, and with that knowledge, you're unlikely to read about an animal's death and assume the worst (negligence or mistreatment). Without Zoo Days continuing, the website is pretty much the only channel left for this sort of information to get out.

In a case like the death of this Duiker, its very unlikely to receive a public announcement from them- most visitors would never have noticed it anyway.

Announcing it on a website like this is unlikely to give the zoo any seriously bad publicity, and keeps people up to date with happenings at the zoo. It also allows anyone who might have wanted to go specifically to see it to save a wasted journey.
