ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade 03/08/10

I'm not aware of any other zoo who plays this trick and I think its rather naughty. .

Port Lympne do this with their 'African Experience' though it is presented as being a seperate attraction from the rest of the Park, and was set up more recently.

Interestingly, when I visited Port Lympne last week, the £5 African Experience supplement is now included in the advertised charge at the gate (pushing entrance over £20). Chap on the gate did ask if I wanted to do the African bit (which I did) - I don't know if the £5 would have been deducted if I said no.

Is Asha still living with her Mum or are Asha and Behan seperated now? Are Behan and Beluki pregrant?

@Alan: did you take a photo of Asha in the pool?

I did not I'm afraid; I had my long lens on the camera and the shorter one was in my car, next to Hugo's house.
I did get a couple of shots of Beluki in the outdoor pool. Behan was in the next paddock, looking rather large to my eyes, Asha was isolated in the new house and the small yard behind it. Ideally they need another paddock if they are going to keep 3 cows; perhaps they could nibble a bit off the camels, yaks and Pere David's deer section of the Asian drivethrough.

Yesterday, the girl on the gate took one look at me (old geezer with big camera bag) and said 'You don't want the African Experience ride do you?' I agreed that I did not and got in for the standard fee (minus £4 for showing the discount ticket for visiting Howletts the day before). Actually I've never done the African Experience, just trekked around on foot - and I've been moving slowly today in consequence :o

Just the same as me.... And it is quite a trek up and down all those slopes, especially now the tractor and trailer taxis have been dispensed with since they opened the African area.

That was convenient....;);)I don't believe she went in the pool at all!(joke).....:D:D

I should have thought they could keep Asha with her mother almost indefinately, at least when they are outside. Basel always kept their mother and daughter breeding females together in the outdoor paddock , a lot smaller than Whipsnade's, and they have had several different mother/daughter couples over fifty years. But of course Whipsnade may have seperated her because she isn't staying.

... and San Diego WAP has a herd of more then a dozend rhinos together. They are more social then some zoos make you believe, at least related females. Saathi from Animal Park Berlin lived together with her mother even after the younger sister Majula was born and it went very well. Now Saathi has been moved (to Beauval I think?) and some frequent visitors have been concerned she might be very shy alone, without mum.

I've seen them in Kaziranga and despite the overall solitary nature, couples and trios of related animals are quite common to see and you often see several grazing near each other. I believe calves normally stay with the mother several years and probably maintain a contact bond longer still. Basel's mother/daughter pairs have always been the focal point of their grouping. Sometimes both mother and adult daughter have had calves at the same time and they live together as a group in the daytime.
