If you could what improvements would you make to the zoo and why?

Would you bring animals in

or move some out?

Hi Lee

Firstly Id move the otters from the Red Panda enclosure, I dont think they are helping poor Ming Ming settle in from Birmingham (he was one of the cubs of Lushui and Pali in Chester).

I like the sealion enclosure so Id keep that, also the tigers seem to have a nice large enclosure, but maybe extend the snow leopards one?

The Welsh zoo first introduced me to Red Pandas which has been a burning passion ever since :)

First of all! I would make the hoofstock paddocks more accessible to visitors, and also replace the fencing. This area would be my main area for improvement. I would tidy up the Flamingo area and improve the housing for the Ostrich. I would then move the camels over with the Przewalski Horse, to create quite a nice asian area. Other species such as Wallaby and Deer, I would leave in that area.

In the spare Camel enclosure I would then bring in a pig species. Maybe Red River Hogs. Develop the enclosure etc. I would update the artic fox, polecat and Rhea/Cassowary? (Species unsure) and add a few more unusual species.

Extend the reptile house, to include the Tortoise Paddock.

I would then close the petting zoo area, move out all the domestic species and use this space (and indoor area) for a small antelope species. Or maybe even a new primate species.

I would also update the Bear enclosure, a quick tidy up.The last area I would work on is the long slope with the ?Vultures? and Red Squirrels. I would develop the paths, and re-build the enclosures. Another thing I would do is develop the outdoor Chimp area, with plenty more climbing oportunities and and lots more vegetation!

I bet you a wondering what I would keep hey? :D Well, I would keep the Sealion area, Penguins, Margay, Marmosets and Tamarins, Parrots (maybe with a tidy up), Tigers, Snow Leopards, Meerkats, African Aviary, Red Pandas, Gibbons and Spider Monkeys.

If you havent noticed, Im a bit of a perfectionist! But I believe this zoo has alot of potential! Just needs the money! :(

You would really keep the snow Leopard enclosure the way it is? Also thing the spider monkeys and gibbons could do with a larger enclosure aswell.

Its not that bad of an enclosures for Snow Leopards,in my opinion its far better than one built alot more recently than this one!

To be honest, I dont believe the spider monkey enclosure is that bad! Nor is the Snow Leopard enclosure! Although ,I may extend the Gibbons onto part of the lawn! :p

On a personal note i'd move it to South Wales. lol

You are right, a good sized Zoo or Wildlife Park located somewhere close between Cardiff & Swansea would almost certainly do well, having a large Urban population so closeby. There is no real zoo in this area. (Tenby is miles away)

I think the Welsh Mountain Zoo have more than enough clusters of mature trees to allow all its monkeys and gibbons to have open air access to wooded areas, for very little cost.

Similarly, the area by the camels, with its conifer treeline, would suit an open-air snow leopard complex similar to Port Lympne.

Structurally, and in terms of size and indoor space, the chimpanzee enclosure is fantastic. All it needs is some dark brown or green paint and a telegraph pole forest akin to Chester's, maybe some shrubs or some small protected edible herb areas, but really once proper climbing facilities were installed I don't think hardy tropical plants would make much difference. Inside, some use of height and some nest platforms and hammocks would improve things.

The Welsh mountain zoo don't appear to make much of their paddock space, with its amazing views. Adding ostrich, nowadays a less significant zoological exhibit given they are farmed commercially, seems out of step with the surroundings here. I think mixing the camels with the Przewalski horse is a good move, I also think that the next UK collection suitable for Kiang should be the WMZ. Their paddocks are ideal for building up species similar to (or holding surplus bachelors from) those at the Highland Wildlife Park.

While they should make much of their breeding American Alligators anyway (although do we really need to be breeding this species in the UK?), I'd understand why a new tropical house might be the next large investment. To increase visits during bad weather, with a building that would likely also increased walk-through exhibit space, seems entirely rational in North Wales.

I do applaud a new Tropical Facility, allthough as you said I would rather have it they would concentrate on pure-bred endangered Morelett's or Cuban crocodiles (which can be readily made available if collections become keener on the reptilian part of their Ark in the Park conservation ethos instead of investing in a non-descript common croc species in a mega exhibit ... IMO a waste of good space more deserving for the rarer ones).

You would have to source more Artic Fox as the last one died earlier this year
