ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade Visit 22/8/10

Visited Whipsnade today for the first time in approximately two years.

On arrival was slightly miffed at the £4 parking charge, but being the ardent zoo supporter that I am, paid it. This year I have been to Marwell, Chester, and Monkey World, and the parking was free at all of these. Also whilst queueing there were two attendants armed with a camera, who were very insistent on taking peoples photos (the reason at the time they said was to break the queueing up)....only upon our exit did I discover they were selling the photos. I understand why ZSL would seek an extra source of revenue (especially in these times) but this kind of took the edge off of the day for me, Whipsnade is normally such a laid back and relaxing place to visit.

However, once through the entrance and feeling a lot better headed for the elephants, where all nine animals were visible in the outside enclosures. In the main paddock were the 2 babies, the almost 6 year old Euan, and 4 cows. Interestingly Emmet and another cow were seperate in the smaller outside paddock. Euan was being rather boisterous, at one point charging one of the females. Later on when we saw the Elephants again he seemed rather 'excited' if you catch my drift....I wonder if they are seeking to move him on with behaviour like this going on? Didnt Chester move Po Chin and Tunga out when they were younger than Euan? I didnt see any keepers to ask myself.

Didn't mange to get any photos of the Asian Rhinos in their pools, because they were all outside. Saw the cheetah cubs, but could only view them through a fence, so pictures are not good. Also slighlty disappointed that the wolverine was not out:(, and Im not sure whether I liked the sloth bear enclosure...enrichment wise and space wise it seemed ok, but seeing any animals these days through chain link fence is horrible. I guess cost played a part. I enjoyed Chesters spectacled bears enclosure a lot more.

Later in the day we very much enjoyed the bird display, and the bird gardens are always a hidden gem. Sorry if this review is not detailed enough but I read the report from a few weeks ago and there didnt seem to be much more to add. Overall a good day, and I was happy to get another pressed penny to join the rapidly growing collection!

I believe the carpark land at Whipsnade is not owned by ZSL, hence the seperate charge- though I agree it is pretty steep- but visitors have no choice if they don't wish to pay the much larger extra amount to take a car into the Park.

I would resent people taking photos of me at a zoo entrance- I'm surprised ZSL are allowing this to happen.

Re Euan- I think the longer he stays with his natal group the better, at least till he's 8 or 9 or becomes too 'difficult' in the group- too many young bulls are removed when they still have a close relationship with their family.

Has the Bird Garden been re-opened? It was closed for an indefinate time last year.

True, there is a larger amount of money to pay if you take the car in, but if you dont, you then have to pay for the train to go into the Asian Reserve!

Never been to Whipsnade (might have a chance next year) but car parking seems like a no-win situation for those driving. Unless I'll have a ride, I will have to use public transport (if there is any, that is?)

Apologies - At the time of writing my original post I was pretty tired, and meant to say the discovery centre, not bird garden. I know it's probably not the best of its kind in the uk, but I always enjoy going in there.

I can understand the car parking situation now you have explained it - although it wouldnt hurt for ZSL to display some information explaining why you have to pay.

Parking at ZSL London Zoo is even steeper – £12.50!!! But at least people have the option to come by public transport, as it's easy to get there by tube/bus/walking, unlike Whipsnade.

London Zoo also has the photo "experience" at the entrance which I find very embarrassing, but I've never heard visitors complain. I believe it's a franchise which does bring in much-needed revenue for the zoo.

It sounds like a modern equivalent of the Peanut vendors that used to sell little bags of animal food(peanuts) which you could buy just outside the Zoo.(1950's)

But they were independant, this sounds like an 'in house' job.

I visited a few weeks ago and found the photo thing irritating too....although it isn't an in-house job as it is part of "Magic Memories" who do the same thing at Bristol and also Woburn if I remember correctly!

Hi

Thanks for the interesting report. The car parking is a bit expensive at Whipsnade although if you are a Friend of ZSL it is free! Also during the quietest time of the year (November to February) I believe you can take your car into the zoo for free as the car park is closed.

I have also noticed the picture taking for the 'photo experience' at both London Zoo and Whipsnade recently. I am sure it brings in much needed revenue and can be a good service for some people but I do wish this service would be clearly marked and honestly costed up front without surprising people with charges at the end of their visit.

Get in touch when you are over here and we will see what we can sort out my friend.

The last I heard was that the bird garden will be used for off-show breeding only and will not reopen to the public. There may be a cost saving associated with this.

Unless it is a condition of entry, no zoo can force you to pose for the camera, a polite but firm no is usually enough, cover your face and refuse to stand still if they persist!
