Aardwolf in the UK

Can anyone tell me how many aardwolves are kept at the RSCC including those which have just been sent to Edinburgh? And any other UK collections which keep them presently.

Also, where did these RSCC animals come from? As there was Rabies barrier controls around the keeper entrances to the enclosure at Edinburgh.

Twycross has an elderly male. There are no others in the UK.

Edit: forgot about Hamerton

Hamerton have bred them , last I heard was they had the old male plus his son and daughter .

I think RSCC had 4 females but have recently imported more , if Edinburgh has a male they are likely to be in quarantine .

Actually Hamerton has both but at the moment they only have the 1 Eastern Aardwolf (Proteles cristatus septentrionalis). When you see them both side by side the 2 types look very different in colour and build.

If Hamerton does have an Eastern aardwolf, when did it arrive? I thought the aardwolves at Hamerton were all related.

zoogiraffe,

Do you advocate managing/keeping one or the other aardwolf ssp.?
If so, which?

Thanx,

K.B.

Given how different the 2 sub-species look i think they should be managed as seperate populations,as long as numbers of both sub-species can be maintained and bred in the zoo`s involved with them.

There are currently 2.5 Eastern Aardwolf in the U.K. None any older than 2 years RSCC imported all of them to start a founder population, currently there are 5 different bloodlines.

1.2 at RSCC currently
1.1 at Edinburgh currently
0.1 at Hamerton currently

The different subspecies look quite different, the eastern being more slender and taller with more defined coloration.

Do you know where these animals were imported from?
Thanks.
