the asiatic lion studbook is held at twycross so i doubt they'd evr go out of them. I had heard a new set of enclosure for lions, dhole and otter will be built with eed beds near the elephant paddock! also that the amur leopards would most likely move to the lion enclosure! twycross also are getting rusty spotted cats soon!

Already heard that about the new enclosures near the eles... moving leopards to the lion enclosure sounds a bit surprising, as its an open-topped enclosoure, but its probably not impossible.

Where did you hear about the Rusty Spotted Cats? That would be unbelievably brilliant!!!! :D I still miss the Sand Cats at Twycross, but that would certainly fill the void IMO.

Any news about a male Gorilla to replace 'Sekondi'? Its nearly a year now since he died.....:(:(

Badly damaged foot and tail - not genetic but also not good for display.

I saw Hari years ago when he was at South Lakes - found it highly amusing to hear the park owner talking about the "fittest and wildest tigers in Europe", only to see one of Hari's former keepers stroking him through the wire fencing late afternoon when most visitors had gone home!

Twycross zoo Elephants.

I am delighted to learn that NorJahan, the Asian Elephant has scanned positive for pregnancy following A1 treatment. Her baby is due around August 09. Scans on the other cows showed that Tara is not quite mature enough yet, Tonzi has a reproductive defect a will be taken off the breeding register and plans are in place to start training Mimbu (the matriarch) to accept A1 later this year. Good news!. I was there earlier this week and was impressed with the relatively new Francois Langur . They have a good, comprehensive primate collection but I do wish that there was some order in where each is exhibited. Asian species are side by side with African and American making study difficult. There are four groups of Howler monkeyat different points around the zoo.

Thats great news about the Asian elephants

Yes it is... I'd still rather see them keep a bull but this is the next best thing.

NorJahan is younger than the two females which have already bred and provided the pregnancy develops okay, this will be her first calf(fingers crossed).

It's a shame Tonzi can't breed though

I'd hesitate from suggesting it might be because she hasn't been bred for a while...;) Could be, but equally could be some other reason. I don't know.

I think that's good practice: in the houses where there are only wire barriers between the species, wouldn't it be stressful to house closely related species side by side? The langur house has spectacled, Javan, purple-faced & Phayre's (if the old lady is still with us) in adjacent enclosures, but at least they have wooden screens between them.

Anyone which knows something about the Grey Gibbon Hylobates muelleri that Twycross still has (according to ISIS)?

I recall seing this species in several European zoos in the 1980s and up until the early 1990s but got quite suprised when I had a quick look at ISIS. It is almost gone from European collections now. I guess the numbers never have been large but I still thought that around a dozen or so still remained in Europe.

I have been told that they kept 2 males up until only a few years ago? my friend told me that the other male was of the muelleri race, is that true? anyone knows what subspecies the remaning male belongs to? the age of the remaning animal?

Very happy for any info at all about this species in Twycross.

The Twycross Muller's Gibbon is the only one at the zoo. His name is Smiler and is housed in the Gibbon Nursery. He does have another Gibbon with him for company but not sure on the species. I believe it's a female. I will try and have a look next time I'm there working.

Its a Lar Gibbon, according to ISIS the Muellers at Twycross is the same as the lone male at Paignton Zoo.

Twycross

The female Phayre's Langur was still there when i last went but that was last summer. In response to Pertinax's question about a new male in the 2nd Gorilla Group I assume they may be waiting till the new youngsters are a little older. I think there was an incident once at Howletts where a silverback ripped the arm off a baby gorilla that he knew wasn't his so I doubt very much the keepers would want that to happen to Namoki (i think thats her name). On the point of the Gorillas have they found a male to replace Mamfe in the older gorilla group or have they put Joe in with them. When i went last summer there was a sign mentioning a gorilla called Samson, is he a new addition??

I will not be going to Twycross now on the 23rd of February, as It Clashes with a Duke Of Edinburgh training day...

Really disappointing, seeing as though I haven't been for Nine years....

"Kerry" the female Phayre's Langur is still with us and is the only one outside Vietnam. She is doing very well for her age.

As for the Gorilla's, we do have a male called Sam-Sam who at Twycross in late 2006 with a female called Yinka, both arrived from Edinburgh Zoo. Yinka has since died, and Sam-Sam is now in with 2 females "Biddy & Bongo", so Sam-Sam isn't a new addition. They are both the parents to Sekondi (Ti).

Hope this helps.

Keep up! 'Namoki' died about 3 months ago from malnutrition- possibly resulting from her mother being stressed by having no male in the group. So that problem doesn't exist now and the other youngster 'Matadi' is nearly five years old now so should be able to look out for himself- especially if a new youngish male is chosen and introduced carefully. I hope they'll do something about this soon, as the 2nd female 'Asante' has never bred and is the only offspring of wildcaught Eva- who is now dead.
