Colchester produced a chocolate chimp too- born to two normal black chimps which had been related to Coco/Jambo etc at Twycross.

Did Jambo's coat ever grow again?- I remember him being treated for a hair disorder that made him totally bald at one time..

Do Twycross still have Chocolate Chimps?

Twycross have 5 brown chimpanzees, Jambo, who is still bald, Coco the old girl, Mongo a young male, Genet a female and Mwekundu(who is the mother of the black baby called Tuli).

Norjahan was tethered inside, whilst the remainder of the herd were in the outdoor enclosure. I wonder if her second scan was iminent - there were no staff nearby to ask.
Construction at the bottom end (by entrance ) looks chaotic with no hint of what it might eventually be. Again, no one in evidence to enquire from

I was also at Twycross today, when I passed the elephant house it was closed, so I peered through the window and saw a elephant who must have been Norjahan was laying down in the house sedated surrounded by people and it looked as though they were scanning her.

Coco was purchased from an army camp in Senegal. She is now approx in her mid 40s. She is still going very strong.

I'm sure there used to be a Chocolate Chimp called Millie.

Does anyone know all the babies that Coco has had? I only know Jambo.

Apparently, the hyenas, if they get them, will be going in the brand new enclosure behind the elephants which will enclude Lions, (The current male apparently going to Bristol so they are getting 2 felmales from some where), Dholes and the Hyenas will go into the new 3 sepparated enclosures.

Any idea where the Hyenas will be coming from? I think there were some hyenas at Suffolk or Banham are they still there??

What's happening to Chandra from Bristol if the Twycross male goes there?

What species of hyena will they be getting?
Good question well presented next, seriously at the moment it just says Hyena on the plan but as far as i`m aware their are surplus of all 3 species in Europe if you know where to look.At the moment in the U.K their is 1 Spotted at Colchester,2 Striped at Colchester,at least 2 at Suffolk Wildlife Park and 2 or 3 at Heythrop(private zoo),and no Brown at all.

Hyenas at Twycross, wow, didn't see that one coming!!! I've always thought that they had a really good animal collection, even excluding primates, but with this and news of Rusty Spotted Cats, they're really getting adventurous now. Very excited about the direction the zoo seems to be taking! :D

2 stripped hyenas were born in the Animal Park Berlin last year, and I think the (small) Zoo Aschersleben had offspring too.

Editted to add: Aschersleben had indeed 3 stripped hyenas born in 2007. I would love them to go to Twycross because the Zoo Aschersleben (like the Animal Park Berlin unfortunately) is working a lot of an animal dealer and who knows where they will end up otherwise.

Hyaenas in general

Hyaenas are very poorly represented in our UK zoos. I've only ever seen Spotted Hyaena at two zoos- Dudley (long ago) and Colchester who now have just one.

Striped are probably the most eyecatching species and they'd be a welcome addition at Twycross but I'd like to see more zoos keeping Brown and Spotted Hyaenas too.

I suppose it would be impossible to keep Hyaenas and Lions together in Safari Parks as the hyaenas would get killed too easily by the Lions, but I'm thinking maybe there's a way Safari Parks could show these interesting animals? The problem is their most interesting behaviour is as scavengers- otherwise they tend to just lie around- so are not a brilliant exhibit.

They had brown hyenas at Port Lympne a while ago too, and I think Belfast has bred hyenas, not sure which species.

Well you could say this about just about any carnivores in captivity- esp boring old lions which don't do anything but sleep. Spotted hyenas in particular can be quite active. I think a big group of spotteds would make a great exhibit, but most zoos would probably not want more than a pair.

I don't remember ever seen Brown Hyaena at PL and I've been often over the years. I wonder where they were?

Regarding sleepy carnivores- true, but lions have a 'cachet' that hyaenas definately don't. I agree a big group of spotteds (the 'classic' species of the three in my opinion ),would be a great exhibit, particularly around feeding time- that's another reason I thought maybe they were more suited to a Safari Park- type enclosure than a zoo.

Belfast kept and bred spotted hyena which left to colchester many years ago to make way for hunting dogs!

There were definitely brown hyenas at PL, in early 80's, down at the bottom by the barbary lions opposite a kiosk. I remember because I had never seen them before and there were very few in captivity. I don't know if they ever bred.

So that's where Colchester's Spotted hyaenas(now just one) came from.

Do you know(or can you find out) where Belfast got them from- I wonder if it was Dudley by any chance?

I wonder what happened to them? I've only seen this species once or twice- I can remember Frankfurt Zoo having them a long time ago...
