if they wanted asian animals also they would have no problems acquiring blackbuck, any of 5 or so species of deer, buffalo, banteng etc. the smart move would also be to make an luring attraction of the asian elephants out there, but fat chance that will ever happen.

hey, are there still wild blackbuck in Australia, or have they all gone now?

Still a large feral population on Cape York. Also a lot privately held on "game farms". [Read - hunting ranches].

where did the blackbuck on Cape York come from? I was under the impression they had only ever been released in Western Australia?

Blackbuck

Sorry to interrupt the entertainment for a minute boys and girl, but to reply to Chlidonias: I have no idea where the Cape York Blackbuck came from. Must have been before my time [and I've worked out that I'm about the same age as Ara!!!!!]. Wherever they came from originally, there are now a heap of them up there and they are a significant vertebrate pest.

Pity we cant catch them up and stock up all the zoos with new blood (not that i know if there is any problems with Blackbuck Blood)

A little respect for my old age, please :p

(They say that with age comes wisdom! I'm hoping that mine kicks in soon.)

We may be about the same age , Steve, but the difference is, you own a zoo! I on the other hand own 6 aviaries and a fish tank. :o

Getting serious for a minute, and on the subject of blackbuck, I know that during the Hallstrom era Taronga had close to 100 blackbuck and not all these went to Dubbo. A lot were sold to farmers and landed hobbyists.
(Taronga were rather prodigal with their ungulates in those days, and copped criticism for slaughtering surplus eland etc. to feed the cats.)

How blackbuck got up north in large numbers I don't know, but there seemed to be no shortage of them 40 or 50 years ago.

Ha Ha!
Don't knock it, Steve...

I know you're doing it hard at the moment (with dumb politicians and red tape) but basically you are living the dream of a lot of us desperates on this site. (We're with you all the way!)
