Just wanted the Aussies to know that Burgers' Zoo in Holland announced today that they sent four female chimps on their way to Monarto Zoo...

According to Burgers' they where asked by the studbook keeper how they would feel about sending 4 females over to "New Zealand".

Considering those words, i wonder if they'll stay at Monarto, or they'll just do the quarantaine for a New Zealand Zoo?

There's room for 20 chimpanzee in Hamilton Zoo's large exhibit but they only have 8 so they may go there?

The 4 females would be the ones Monarto have been organising to import and introduce to their 4 males in their recently completed chimp exhibit.

The New Zealand reference would be an error. They'll be doing quarantine at Adelaide Zoo according to this article.

Dutch 'girls' go ape for our 'boys' as Monarto Zoo welcomes four new chimpanzees | News.com.au

FOUR female chimpanzees from The Netherlands went on public display for the first time at Monarto Zoo today.

The group were flown to Australia on cargo planes in early October from Burger's Zoo in Arnhem Holland. They then spent 40 days in quarantine before being introduced to the four existing male chimps at Monarto about a week ago.

Keepers were concerned it could take weeks or months for the male chimps to accept the new females, but before the end of the first day the group were acting like old friends.

"The introductions went extremely well with all members currently building bonds amongst themselves, spending time grooming, playing and foraging together," Curator of Monarto Zoo Beth Pohl said.

Keepers are confident the breeding process will not be far off, though they do plan to give the group time to settle and become as cohesive as possible.

The chimps are on display at the new $2 million chimpanzee enclosure.

Included in the Dutch group are 11-year-old Zwala, 11-year-old Galatea, 14-year-old Soona and 17- year-old Zombi.

The females have joined Tsotsi, originally from Adelaide Zoo, Sandali from Taronga Zoo and Gombe and Boyd from Wellington Zoo.

I've never heard of breeding referred to as a 'process' before!
