Well, I know it took a while to get back to you Blondie. However, I was at the zoo the other day and say the new statue in the garden area. Phase 1. (See Gallery)

There is also plans (new) there of the garden area, a drastic change, but I think look better!

Also, plans of the African Pavilion. Got a sneak peak look and I think it will be open within about a month, they are starting to plant, and it looks like it is coming along great!

Another interesting fact, instead of a separate post... the zoo is starting a bachelor herd of P. Horses.

Sounds awesome Quartz:) My class has finally settled on a date and i should be at the zoo the week of the 15th of november, i'll be sure to take lots of pictures for everyone:)

Also where is the new herd being kept? Is there a rotation now? Do you think this is a good sign?

They are in the main paddock, the zoo is using the old bison paddock in Eurasia as a second paddock for the species. I think this is a great sign, it will allow us to have two groups of P. Horses instead of having all the surplus males separated.

okay awesome:)
Perhaps with the older exhibits being used, work on the eurasia section will get pushed to start faster and faster as the zoo notices a bigger need for it.

I don't think that is a factor in the matter. It will all depend on the funding and when they get it.

Wow thats great about the P. Horses. Quartz is right its a funding issue at the moment with so many projects Eurasia upgrade and the new Canada have been pushed to the bottom of the pile.

I think the three zoos will be more of a trust thing between canada and china. I believe that in years to come all 3 zoos will have their own pandas, after they have shown that they are fully able to care for them for periods of time.

Ahh, fair enough. I wish we had pandas in Britain :(

I think this is a rather naive belief. This "plan" appears far too similar to the "rent-a-panda" era in US zoos during the 1980s that ended with major policy changes that resulted in long-term breeding loans as opposed to the "circus comes to town" approach this seems to be reverting to. "China," "trust," and "pandas" are words that are hard to credibly use in a single sentence.

According to this new article, each zoo will have then for 5 years which will give them enough time to settle down and breed hopefully... The fact that the 3 zoos are sharing them is so that, instead of "renting" the pandas for 10 years for each zoo they will split it, this in turn will generate a profit from having the pandas. If they had them for those extended periods of time the zoos fear that their expenses will be greater then their profits in reference to the pandas.

That seems to make a bit more sense than just 24 months. If cubs are born at one, would they move with their parents or would the zoo then keep the cubs?

The cubs would most likely return to China

Consider me excited! I have never seen pandas before (aside from TV, etc, obvoiusly) and I always thought the zoo could do with another bear species.

Do u think that the Toronto zoo is ever going to get a breeding pair of Indian rhinos and Tapirs? Because it was be really nice to see some baby tapirs and rhinos running around with there parents. :D

Also why is it taking so long with African Rainforest pavilion renos!?
