Chester Zoo Visits Autumn

Popped in for a quick visit today. Mainly to see the new Giraffe calf. Was hoping to stay a bit longer than we did but we had a Nieces 6th Birthday party to visit :P

Noticed that the Male Pudu that was in the cattle house wasn't there today and also noticed a carry case in the Warty Pig side of the house possibling preparing to move some of this years piglets?

The new Giraffe calf looks really well and was having lots of fun running around her paddock today. Keeper I spoke to said that she seems fine and Aoife is letting her feed regulary the only slight concern for the keepers is that Aoife is far to relaxed and is wondering off leaving the calf on her own to explore the enclosure and to wander towards the water resulting on the keepers having to enter the enclosure today to bring the calf towards the house. I managed to get a few shots of her today. Have uploaded them to my Flickr account Flickr: Lee McCarthy's Photostream

When I was there the afternoon the male Pudu was in the enclosure with the carry case so I would guess that is just a shelter for the Pudu :)

Or maybe, the Carry Case it to actually move the Pudu? ;) The Pudu would have to become used to the carry case before the move, right?

The birth of the Giraffe calf has now been formally announced and a vote has been opened for people to choose a name for her via the zoo website. The names are as follows....
Anaka

- Aisha ‘life’ in Swahili

- Zafi ‘pure’ in Swahili

- Tula

- Yala (river)

Nice to see them going for a african name this time :)
Chester Zoo - Pure Rothschild giraffe born

Howcome many Chester Zoo Giraffe names end in A??? FaidA... BellA... AiofE (Pronunciation?)... OrlA...

And now we has Aisha, Tula and Yala? :D Although it is nice to see that Chester is allowing the public to vote, I personally would for Yala. :)

EDIT: Looking on the site there is also Anaka...

I gave Aisha my vote, but I feel the standard of these names has slipped since the last competition, in which the available names included Bella, Florence, Betty and Edie :D (Probably after keeper's [grand]parents...)

The pudú has access to the inside of the cattle house for shelter, so I think Paix is probably correct about acclimatising the animal to the carry-case.
Aoife (Pronunciation?)...
Aoife is Irish and pronounced "ee-fah", so even that one sounds like it has an "a" on the end.

Someone on the zoo's Faceache page has suggested Pocoyo.

Have uploaded some of my picture taken yesterday of the Giraffe calf.

Also noticed yesterday for the first time all of the monkeys from Monkey Island outside at the same time. Which was nice to see. :)

Visited today, no sign of the new Warty Piglets under the Bat's Bridge did see female though. Also no sign of the Pudu that was inside the Cattle House a few weeks ago. The Giraffe calf was inside today sat down on a pile of hay. A standoff barrier has now been placed on the edge of the path opposite the Giant Anteater and Pudu enclosures. There is also now an information board for the Giant Anteater. The pathway leading from the Gemsbok to the Dik Dik's has been closed off looks like some sort of pipping or cabling is being done as part of the concrete pathway has had a channel cut out of it. I think thats it but if you have any questions please ask and I will do my best to try and answer.

I visted on Saturday. Saw the pudu both in the outdoor area and indoor area. No sign of a carry case though. I also saw all 4 Warty Piglets....

I was also at the zoo yesterday.

I did see the Pudu, sat outside in the little area where the Warty Piglets were.

Also there seems to have been another Scimitar Horned Oryx calf.

The updates inside Fruit Bat Forest are progressing well. The new lighting is in and although it wasn't on when we visited on Saturday, it looks like it'll really enhance the building, giving the impression of moonlight through the trees. The pathways are wider in some areas and the pond has gone. The trees are being repositioned so that viewing is improved and to encourage the bats to fly between them.

The refurbished spectacled owl aviaries (on the left-hand side when you're heading towards the Jubilee Square toilets) were empty, yet again.

On this side, the only two aviaries currently occupied are those that are home to the great grey owl and the northern hawk owl.

I'm told that the lime avenue pathway from the entrance to Monkey Islands down to Fruit Bat Forest was being resurfaced today, so bear that in mind for visits this week.

The Giraffe webcam is back up and Kelly and Bella left for Scotland this morning according to the post above it

Good luck to them both! :)

Does this mean Chester have finally achieved an all-Rothschild herd or have I forgotten one?
