Free entry to Victorian Zoos

The Victorian State government Opposition leader has promised that schoolchildren will be able to visit the government's zoo properties [Melbourne/Healesville/Werribee] for free if his party is elected at the upcoming elections. His government will pay the entry costs.

Any thoughts?

If he's going to subsidise zoo entry to government zoos in the metropolis, should he also subsidise entry to privately owned parks in rural and regional areas?

LOL, And six months after they got into government they would put the fee's back on again saying the state can not afford it

Maybe head over and see how this has worked out for London Zoo. Seems a shame to use as an election gimmick, but that's politicians for ya.

does this mean all schoolchildren that wish to go whenever they want or those just going on a school excursion?

I'm not sure Jesse. You're in Victoria - do you want to give him a call and ask him for us? I guess that all pollies down there will be very accessible at the moment!

The policy is school age children to get free admission on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. And yes we have contacted Ted Bailleu about private zoos and no they haven't thought that one through.

Phew. . . because school visits are the biggest earners for a few of our government zoos. It's not entirey stupid. It MAY boost the adult numbers as it would make a family day out alot cheaper.

The policy is to increase the Zoos Vic subsidy to cover the loss of revenue, so depending how they do that, if you are right, the zoos may come out ahead. It looks as if we will be left dangling.

Of course, this discussion is predicated on the Victorian Liberals winning the election next week, which isn't going to happen.

MRJ beat me to it but I wound't be calling him anyway, I can't stand him or the liberal party for that matter :D but... if he could sweeten the deal for zoos across vic, maybe he would be the best of mates.

this propsed plan could have quite a negative impact. i'm not saying all kids are pains but could you imagine them all over the place. The ones that pay can cause enough trouble as it is.

Oh wow can you imagine? Instaid of putting kids into vacation care every school holidays, all the ferals/bogans will just drop their kids at the Zoo gate every morning.

If this comes in, please remind me never to go to Vic Zoo's during school holidays/weekends/public hols!

I'm sure the zoo would have a policy regarding supervision of children if this was ever to happen.

Does anyone know if this would this apply to all of the ZoosVic Properties?

I would suggest you should never go to any big zoo during school holidays/weekends/public hols anyway.

:p
