Taronga Zoo Taronga Gorilla Boys to Orana 2013

La Vallee des Singes in France has some interesting future breeding males. Kibali should be a good candidate as the new breeding male at Sidney.

Has a group been identified yet for his older halfbrother 'Badongo' also at La Vallee des Singes ?

Unknown to me towhere Badongo is leaving. But as far as I can read the signs Badongo will leave soon / 2011 his natal group.

On the other hand, Sidney has two outdoor areas for the gorillas. Maybe Kibabu and the two F's will take place there. In that case Badongo could be the candidate for Sydney. Or is my information inadequate?

Is Badongo still living in the main group? I much prefer to see this (where possible) rather than males placed in bachelor groups as I think it is a far more natural lifestyle and leads to better development/social training in a young male, particularly if he is required for breeding.

Unless things have changed recently I believe Taronga has only a single Gorilla exhibit(?)

Unknown to me if Badongo is on his own or in the family group. I prefer the last.
As far as I understood and saw from the photos Sidney had two outside areas.

Besides that you can understand some more new developments of exchange the gorillas in the EAZA area has been decided and will be act the coming years. But I don't have details.

Taronga does have two outdoor areas, but one is very small. It is home to a couple of de brazzi guenons. I don't know if there is two seperate indoor areas. It would be cruel to move Kibabu into the other area if he could still see and hear his family in the indoor area but could not be with them.

As Boof says, the smaller area at Sydney holds De Brazzas. However, there are plans to expand ther gorilla complex eastwards from this exhiobit to encompass the vacant area left when the old Seal Theatre and Penguin Pool was demolished. This should allow another enclosure comparable in size to the one now holding gorillas.

Unless, of course, someone has changed their mind and decided to put in something else instead.

I think in cases like this a complete move as will happen now is better for these males though IMO its still not a comfortable solution.

When Sydney bought these troop of gorillas there were indeed two outside areas to be used by the gorillas.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes. The one currently holding the gorillas was the enclosure for the family group and the current de brazza enclosure was for bachelors.

That would be good as I have always thought the main outside enclosure is really not big enough for a Gorilla group, currently 8 animals. They really need an area similar to the Chimpanzees. (This group came from Apenheul where they had a large outdoor island, much larger than what they have at Sydney).

The 2nd outdoor area is so small IMO its not really big enough for Gorillas at all but maybe they would alter it too if they do a renovation/expansion of the enclosure which I think is a fairly high priority(for the Gorillas' wellbeing). Perhaps before the changes to the group planned in 2013?

I don't know that Gorillas have ever used the smaller(de Brazza) enclosure-maybe the two young males that went to Japan did for a while?

I went to the Zoo yesterday and it seems that instead of expanding the gorilla complex, they have decided to put in something else instead - picnic tables and gardens. The whole area has been landscaped, terraced and planted. Didn't get a chance to see any of the primate keepers so I don't know what the long term plans are.

I remember seeing two young blackbacks and so it could possibly be the ones that went to Japan, Haoko and ???

That is not good in terms of the gorilla expansion. But possibly in the future they might change their minds about it....

I was going to say maybe that's only temporary but the photo shows a rather permanent looking feature. However I suppose it could be deconstructed if they had funds to extend the Gorillas' area at a later date.

I think the existing Gorilla enclosure(outdoors) can really only house the group at the size it is now(8). When I visited some years ago I was struck at how comparatively small their outdoor area was, though the group is slightly smaller now than it was then, I think.
