Largest Bird Collections

another place is the sylvan heights waterfowl center which just opened to the public recently. It holds one of the largest waterfowl collections anywhere. Nearby, the north carolina zoo has a beautiful aviary although not a terribly large collection. Both places are noted for many first time in captivity breedings
 
how about the National Aviary in Pittsburgh? I have never been there and don't know much about it. A large collection?

There used to be (and probably still is) a species list on their website. From what I remember it's a pretty large collection with several rarely-seen species. I haven't actually been there though.

Thanks. Found this list but if information elsewhere on their page is correct almost half their species are not on it For & About the Birds

Says more than 200 species About The National Aviary

200+ bird species is impressive and place them very high among zoos in USA but still significant less than the zoos in USA with most birds.
 
thanks for that link. Like you say it is out-dated (it says Dallas World Aquarium only has 72 bird species but today I'm sure it is much higher) but still give a good idea about the size of most zoos. To get back to the first question asked by user Electus Parrot this is the top 10 list for North America by that page

San Diego Zoo: 438 bird species
San Diego Wild Animals Park: 306 bird species (many bird species kept both at San Diego Zoo and Animal Park)

There are vast amounts of off-exhibit space in Jungle Trails, A large refrigerated room which once held alcids/somateria and the basement of the Birdhouse which again has numerous off-exhibit aviaries (perhaps more than are on display upstairs in the public space).

I can assure you that there are far more than 110 species of birds at the Cincinnati Zoo ;) As Dicerorhinus said, the behind the scenes areas in the basement of Wings of the World are immense, and they hold far more species than are on display upstairs. Having seen it in person, I can say that it is avian enthusiast's paradise ;) Albeit it has been a few years since I've been down there, I can't imagine that things have changed much in terms of the number of species held off-exhibit. (The large "birds through time" mural downstairs is also very nice!) That's not to mention the species used in the Wings of Wonder bird show!
