For those rhino fans on the forum the SDWAP have now listed 21 Indian rhinos kepted at the park with one male at the SD zoo, oh boy![]()
Since they only started with the two rhinos at the San Deigo zoo which never bred untill they were moved to the SDWAP they have done very well with them It has been interesting watching this herd grow over the years from such small beginings.
I think you're referring to the initial history of White Rhinos here. I beleive(but not 100% sure) that the Indian rhinos started out at the SWAP. Their first male was 'Lasai' bred at Basel, female(s) from India.
The two Indian rhinos did start out being on exhibit at the San Deigo zoo, "the pair" were not getting along to well in the small exhibit, but after sending them both to the SD WAP the breeding program kicked off.![]()

I bow to your superior knowledge here... Its just as well they moved them. At Philadelphia and Milwaukee zoos they had Indian rhinos in small enclosures too and they ended up having to keep them permanently seperated as they became totally incompatable due to the small space. Sadly Milwaukee's pair were the very first two Indian rhinos born in captivity(Whipsnade & Basel) but they were never to breed.
i absolutely love indian rhinos.
jelle - oooooh i get ya.
i absolutely love indian rhinos. i love them like i love eating bacon after a big night out. i love them like i love clean bedsheets. i love them like i love girls in footless tights (okay so maybe thats a weird one, but hey, they look hot!).
anyhow. i love indian rhinos and thus was so disappointed when the female died at taronga. i'm hoping the SDWAP give sydney another, since i can't see them getting any form anyplace else.
i think they consider taronga/sandiego/westernplains/wild animal park "sister zoos" (no doubt a thankyou for all the koalas)
I have read conflicting comments on the world's "largest" rhino. it is generally said to be the white, sometimes they mention the indian and white as sharing the title.
As for the new male all I know is that he is much to young to breed, as is the Wild's new Indian male. However, the male SDWAP got is old enough and will obviously push out Arun as the new breeding male. Arun is to be sent back to Fort Worth, TX. The rhinos all arrived in the states about mid-May 2007.
