Marwell Wildlife Marwell Developments

Dunno too much about the cloudies; I think there was a pair in the early days kept in the stable yard at least. They're probably the animal I'd like to return the most though.

Yes a pair of Clouded Leopards were held in the Stable yard at Marwell in a high cage towards the rear of the yard . I remember seeing one up on its plaltform towards the end of one day - I think they were as elusive as most of this species . I have a vague memory that they did not belong to Marwell . This is going back 35 years or more .

They were originally kept in a little silvercoloured metal 'folly' cage which had previously housed Peacocks (under the previous ownership) It was located in the shrubbery to the left of the main entrance to the Hall.

This cage was later transferred to the first Children's Zoo( where it housed Coatis) and the Cloudeds must have moved into the stableyard.

A very unsuitable species for Marwell at that time really as there was no privacy or purpose-built enclosure for them. Could see a return now though they are such a retiring species, would it be worth it?.

I always thought about having a Howletts style cage in the woods behind the old snow leopard area, a quiet spot which ties in nicely with the nearby gibbons, anoa etc. But knowing Marwell would shudder at the thought of wood and wire now, they'd probably put too much money than needed into it... hmm, tricky one.

With a few exceptions, such as some of the Cloudies at Howletts, this is almost a guaranteed 'no show 'species and I can't see the 'new' Marwell being interested in such an exhibit, it doesn't make a lot of sense really.

new baby tapir.

New baby Brazilian Tapir (sex not mentioned) has been born recently and just in time for the halfterm visitors.

Yes, a female calf called Quito was born on 2nd September and she is adorable (there are photos in the Marwell gallery including some taken by myself on the day she was born ;))

I would just like to ask and beg as many poeple as possible to vote for Cheetah Outlook.

It's not great but some of the other names are appalling...
