primate births

Great news!

Adelaide has also announced a Mandrill birth only a few days ago (even tho she was born in October). This year there has been quite a few primate births with the mandrill and white cheeked gibbon (that sadly passed away) and siamang at Adelaide, silvery gibbon at Perth, eastern black and white colobus and orangutan at Melbourne and I think a siamang at Mogo.

Hang on I've missed something here. Was there a white cheeked gibbon birth at Adelaide? Also the silvery was at Mogo.

I am pretty sure it was a white cheek born to Viet at Adelaide, but sadly passed away a few days after it was born. A silvery was also born at Perth but I now realise the Mogo siamang birth was in 2009, my mistake!

.......... and a female Rhesus Macaque and a total of 3 [so far!] Common Marmosets at the Darling Downs Zoo.

Great news as well. Well done with the pygmy marmosets Steve!!!

Also I just remembered not too long ago a hamadryas baboon at Alma Park Zoo and twin ringtail lemur boys at Perth.

Sorry my mistake as well. The silvery born at Mogo was in 2009.

hey guys, can confirm the HVZ macaque baby is quite cute, bringing the number of c.e macaques at this zoo to 4? visited the place about mid-December and am heading down there again in the morning. the other primate species on display are rhesus macaque and common marmoset (2 seperate groups).
either capuchin monkeys or lemurs are due to arrive soon. place is growing really well and is certainly improving in leaps and bounds.

I think it's great news too but things are in a sad way re primates in this country when we have to get excited about the birth of rhesus and crab-eating macaques.

Primates are one group of animals that Aussie zoos are able to import without too many restrictions, are always of interest to the public and should be the backbone of every zoo in large numbers.

I could not agree more Ara but with the current way of thinking with our zoo management little is going to change in the short term, the presant plan appears to be rather short sighted ;) , I feel we are on the backfoot as zoos go in this country lagging behind many overseas zoos
