Great idea for a youtube video, and great to see shoebill stork at the zoo, where did they come from?

I do hope shanti and Tess's calves survive. Considering all of the calves sired by Thai have died from herpes ( correct me if I'm wrong) or have been stillbirths.

As someone who considers Houston their home zoo (me) who generally praises it a lot more than others on this site, if this one or the other baby due this fall pass away I am COMPLETELY in favor of Houston ending their breeding program. They are 0-14 on elephant births. This is their last shot as I see it.

Best of luck to them and my sentimental favorite zoo.
 
1) In the original review, jbsn says the elephant yard was not complete. Does anyone know if it is done now?

2) He mentions the tall giraffe fence and the unnecessary hotwire. Could be a valid point. Wildlife World Zoo here in Arizona had their giraffes behind a tall chain link fence (no hotwire though). But according to a video on their website, they have a new exhibit and all that keeps the giraffes away from the low visitor railing is a large log! I will be going there on Memorial Day, so expect a first-hand account.

3) The overall impression of everyone here is correct. It is not an outstanding zoo, but it is not a bad zoo either. I have been there on two different trips and did enjoy myself. No single exhibit worth rushing out to see, but overall a generally nice feeling. My biggest complaint is the scuffed up windows, not only at the medium cat exhibits but also in the (otherwise innovative) lion tunnel.

It's a long way from being done. 2 more phases to build. After African Forest Phase 1 is done and giraffes move (December) phase 2 for elephants will start in their former yard, and THEN Phase 3 will start remodeling redoing the current bull yard. So, we're looking at least another 1.5 - 2 years to complete (still 6 months from even being able to start the next part).

Blame those windows not on the animals but on our pollution coming in from Galveston county and the refineries. This is what happens when you make plastics AND have DOW Chemical plants that send pollutants into the air. I think Houston has a wonderful mix of animals and while only the lion exhibit is a standout, jaw dropping great exhibit (I think it is) there is no exhibit I fell is "bad." I feel the 7/10 is underscoring it due to the great collection it has, especially with Rhinos returning and chimps coming this Winter. Only missing the hippos and gorillas at that point which should come in later phases of African Forest. I would be with 7.8-8.0/10 also based on growth potential. Vision, I has it and weigh with it ;)
 
That is really cool how the wide angle photo shows construction progress - taken over several weeks (I assume) from the exact same aerial vantage point. (Must be the roof of the hospital across the street).
 
I found a list of animals at the zoo. I know it's quite old, but I was wondering if anyone knew where all of these primates went and where they were exhibited?

Ah, I see Dusky leaf monkeys, nice :cool:

Emperor Tamarin - Still around
White-eared Titi Monkey - I think these are still in WWoP
Bolivian Squirrel Monkey - squirrel monkeys in natural encounter, dunno if they are "Bolivian"
Sooty Mangabey - There are "red-capped" dunno about this one
Lowe's Guenon - multi monkey exhibit with the Langur
Black-and-white Colobus - gone, used to be in with mandrills
Francois's Langur - still hangin around, multi-monkey exhibit
Eastern lowland gorilla (exhibit demolished for African Forest?) - "Mac" died short of 10 years ago. Houston was the last American zoo to have Eastern lowland, I'd love to see them use that experience to get another troupe brought to Houston.

No clue on the rest.
