UK Gorilla update..

Just got from new year weekend and it looks like it's time for another Prague update: things are now calmer, Bikira nad Moja became buddies, playing together etc., altercations with other female still occur but not so often. Actually it looks like females kind of jealous of Bikira impressing Richard a bit and now they have reson to: on Dec 31st Richard and Bikira mated! :)

or here:
(the action is around 4:00) - this guy keeps posting great videos which sum up everything important or cute; looks like Richard is in love :)

Good news, it seems Bikira is pretty much integrated now and mating will also bond her with Richard-so hopefully a pregnancy soon.

I agree- they are excellent videos of life in the group.

Hopefully Belfast will receive her replacement soon, they really need a suitable partner for their young silverback male Gugas- the last(?) wildcaught Gorilla to enter a zoo, and so far not breeding.

Unsure if this is old news (apologies if so) but I noticed today that there's only Oumbi and Ozala in the newer Gorilla enclosure at Twycross. Ozala's been moved into the older house with Biddy, Bongo & Boulus.

Asante was moved in with Boulas as she wasn't settling with Oumbie. She won't let Boulas anywhere near her and will not stay in the same area as him. I've no idea how they are going to resolve this as she really doesn't know how to interact with him.

Thanks for clarifying, I obviously meant Asante (not Ozala) had moved in with Boulas. There was a small group of keepers watching the group in the older Gorilla enclosure today and one of the females (I assume Asante) was looking quite thin, possiby stress related weight loss?

Asante was moved into the Boulas group several months ago as she wasn't happy living with Oumbie. Boulas is a calmer, more gentle male though it sounds as if Asante isn't much happier with him really.

No she doesn't seem to be. Boulas gets frustrated with her sometimes and tries to chase her, but she's pretty good at keeping out of his way.

howletts gorillas

hi, you seem to know a lot about gorillas in UK zoos. Do you know the animals at howletts? I am looking for someone who knows the animals by name (and possibly has pictures of them). I am trying to name my collection. Thanks! - Eva

I know some of their oldest animals by sight and name (both males and females) but am pretty lost with all the younger generation ones.

Great! I am looking for the names of the females in the four groups at Howletts. Especially the females of Kouillou and Djanghou. Do you know them by name? I can only identify Tamba, Mambi and Matibi, but not the others in the group. Is Otana really male? The name sounds female.

Howletts Gorilla groups

Kouillou group;

Females- Tamba, Matibe, Jubi, Mambi, Emba.
Young- Imbi (f), Otana(listed as male) Mahmah(f) Baloo(m) Imbizi(m) Boula(f) + others?

Djanghou group;

Females- Boma, Kwimba,Sanki, Kimba2, Tamidol, Kidiki
Young- Masindi(f) Kisane(m) + others?

Kifu group;

Females-Sidonie,Tebe,Sangha,Tambabi,Bamilla.
Young- Kanghu(m)Kebu(m) Kifta(f) Kouyou(m) Moanda(f)Ebeki(m)Fubu(m) Oundi(f) + others?

'Kijo' group(no male?)
Females-Mushie,Shumba,Juma, Dihi
Young-Bitono(m) Sasha(f)Jah(m) LouLou(f) Popa(m) Joshi(m) +others?

'Bitam' group(no male).
3 old females-Mouila, Juju, Baby Doll.
Young- Bitanu(m) + 2/3 others.

There could be a few innaccuracies due to recent movements between groups but Howletts tend to keep the family groups pretty constant except when a new group is formed. I do know some of the older male young listed above- principally from the Kifu group, have been moved to Port Lympne quite recently as 'bachelors'.

I know that Mambi had an infant: Mumbou is now almost 2 years old.
Do you have pictures of Emba, Imbi, Jubi and MahMah?
In Djanghou's group Boma and KimbaII have 2-year-old infants: Boma has Nkoumou (m) and KimbaII has Affy (f, daughter of Kijo).
Kouyou, Kanghu, and Fubu have been transferred to Port Lympne recently. What happened to Tebe, who was in Kifu's group?
I would like to match my photos with names. Do you have pictures of (some of) the animals? Thanks for your help!

What happened to Tebe, who was in Kifu's group?

I wasn't aware anything had happened to Tebe, but I haven't been for about three years now. Mind you, after she started having babies, she stopped behaving like a male, displaying etc, and more in the background than she used to be. I would have thought they would have announced it (like they did with Founa) if she had died.

Photos-If you put up photos on the Howletts gallery I can try and identify, BUT I can only do it with some of the older animals.

Do you know anything about a replacement male for Kijo's group?

They are not going to find a replacement for Kijo anytime soon - Dihi's son Kifu is only one. They have to wait until he's older.
Kimba II is now in Djanghou's group. She must have been transferred when she was pregnant.
I have now uploaded photos on the Howletts gallery. Would be really great if you could identify some of them.
