Chester Zoo Chaining elephants Chester Zoo

Chester zoo state that they never have chained their elephants. Do they mean when the elephant is in labour or never chained at all? If they mean the latter I would suggest that this statement is incorrect, as dear old Sheba is seen on the television series made at the zoo chained while having her health check, please note that this is an observation not a criticism as I appreciate keepers safety has to be considered, good wishes to Thi, hope everything goes well for her and the baby.

The elephant husbandry has changed since Zoo Days was made, they now employ protected contact methods. Animals are not chained during labour.

Saying that "they have never chained their elephants" is incorrect as elephant management has changed a lot since Molly and Mannikin arrived in 1941. Where did you read that?

This is an error, as has been pointed out in that thread. Chester no longer chain the elephants, but it cannot be said that they never have. I've never seen the zoo claim otherwise.

I made my enquiry nine hours BEFORE this error was corrected by Yassa on the elephant???? thread.

Sorry, didn't mean to suggest you were ignoring that post or anything, just pointing out that it had been picked up on as incorrect there as well.

The fact remains that as far as I'm aware Chester Zoo have never stated this.

No apology necessary, what I find encouraging about this is how very interested people now are in elephant welfare, not just in this country but also overseas. How lucky we are to have such fine groups of Asian elephants in this country of ours at Chester, Whipsnade and Twycross, and also all the dedicated keepers who look after them, doing a job that at times is grueling and dirty and which can also be dangerous.

TARZAN and all members, my apologies, my wording is wrong.
The management at Chester have said through another member here it is "something the zoo does not do".
I have interpreted incorrectly, apologies for the misunderstanding on my part.
