Chester Zoo Visits Winter

...did you take any pictures of the particular giraffe that you saw, because I can identify Aoife from the others.
See certificate PG version attached (it's raining in Sydney and this might save OrangePerson a job). Female in front.
Also visited today...
Lots of disreputable people there on Sunday. ;)

Indeed. We got a lovely view of the Gambian Pouched Rats though. :D

And we saw all five jaguars, for the first time in ages.

I would say the female at the front is Orla or Aoife, with Thorn behind (though I could be wrong, I've only been paying attention the last couple of visits :D). Faida is shorter than those two and has much whiter channels between the blotches (for want of another word, I can't think what they actually are called :p), so I would rule out her (which is a good thing, because she is too young). Fingers crossed for it being Orla, since she, I think, is the only one with a chance of getting pregnant at the moment.

Sorry I can't be more help :)

Looking again though and I think it is Aoife :(

OK so we're not supposed to anthropomorphise on Zoochat but Thorn is definitely wondering if a bloke can't get a bit of privacy without all the cameras!

Just a quick question about the Bornean Orangutan's.
Are Martha and Tuan always together or put together at times?

I don't think they are together at all these days he wouldn't leave her alone and despite a prolonged period of very frequent mating she didn't get pregnant.

I would think, although I don't claim to know, there'd not be any real urgency for them to breed as both her daughters have had babies with him and very likely will again.

I don't think it's 'company' that is on Tuan's mind and Martha was not getting any respite, it says in the Z magazine he seemed to be infatuated with her.
Maybe when the babies are a bit bigger they'll let him meet the younger females again. One factor was not knowing how Leia would cope with being a first time mum but she is excellent. I know Bornean males are not supposed to be as good with children as Sumatran but Batu at Twycross seems to dote on his little girl so maybe Tuan would like Latifah.

Apparently it will be, once they get around to building it. This is something of a change of policy from Chester, as they've previously not been exactly approving of similar experiences at other zoos.

Having just read all the detail on the website about the new 'experiences' I have to say that I have no problem with what Chester are promoting. I too am a bit sceptical about these kind of things, but on balance I reckon that this is a very canny way of generating additional income and who can argue with that? I know in the past Chester have withdrawn some public animal feeding(I'm thinking about the chimpanzee feeding that used to happen), and I'm not sure what the keepers think of having this additional role in their job description....However, having taken part in keeper for the day which really was amazing, I think anything that engages enthusiasts with Chester whilst generating additional income is positive!

Why its no different to some people so why should Giraffes wait to try again!!!

I'm going to sound stupid here, but can she get pregnant again while Tula's still suckling? I thought that she'd be waiting until she had weaned to be trying again?

If she can't get pregnant after, then surely she wouldn't be trying? Again, I could be well out, but I didn't thing other species could/would get pregnant whilst still caring for one calf - ie. birth interval?

Mind - with a giraffe's gestation it likely makes no difference, if she got pregnant would Tula be weaned before the next calf is born?

I can just imagine the conversation...
"Thorn I'm willing to ignore the fact that you make me live with your other floosies as long as we can have another calf, now be a good lad and get on with it..." :D

A very different situation to giraffes, but a female kangaroo can have three young of different ages on the 'boil' at once; a foetus in the womb, a small joey in the pouch and a not-yet-weaned youngster outside the pouch.

Aoife could technically concieve again now. Kelly (now at Blair Drummond) gave birth to Molly (moved to London Zoo in 2009) in November 2006. Her next calf, Niamh (died due to an infection aged a few weeks old) was born in April 2008. Kelly would of concieved again in January 2007 when Molly was only two months old. Tula's now the same age as Molly was when Niamh was concieved. Hence we could once again be hearing the patter of (not so!) little hooves as early as spring 2012. :D Neither Orla or Faida will be old enough to breed for at least another two years.

Some notes from my visit yesterday:

Thi is looking very big now, she seemed quite subdued and was spending most of her time with Sheba. Sithami and Sundara shared responsibilities of Nayan, and seemed to be having quite a good time as they trotted round the paddock in the afternoon.

Mongoose Mania has closed and its inhabitants moved off-show, as it appears an indoor viewing area is in construction. It is on the left hand side of the enclosure (if walking from tigers) and looks significantly larger than the old nest box.

The inhabitants of the aviary outside Tropical Realm have moved as there is construction work going on in the enclosure.

And finally, the Okapi were very close to mating, perhaps the closest I've seen them but Stuma still being slightly stubborn.
