Adelaide Zoo New Orang for Adelaide

A good move for Adelaide.

However I rather doubt she will in time help 'Karta' learn mothering skills as she(Karta) has a bad history with her babies and older Orangutans like her rarely change their habits by learning from others. But you never can tell...

Two points of interest: Karta was 'loaned' to Perth in the late '90s so that she could learn mothering skills by being up close and personal with Puteri and Temara. This as has been mentioned not worked successfully. Logically Adelaide and the regional program should just put her aside and try with a new female.

Secondly, Puspa is hardly the best mother to learn from. While she did successfully rear Sekara (now a mother in her own right) she fails to cycle regularly and would be unlikely to fall pregnant herself.

My suspicions are that Adelaide is relatively happy to 'sit' with two non-reproductive females (+ a male).

Who is the male at Adelaide and what is his relationship to others in the region?

Kluet was born at Jersey Zoo UK (Gambar x Gina) so not related to the rest of Australian Sumatran Orangutans. 'Karta' originally came from the US (San Diego?) so again is unrelated to other Orangs in OZ, probably the reason they may still be trying to get offspring from her. I can't remember if she has any surviving offspring already?

Puspa sounds rather unlikely as a breeder though a change of partner sometimes helps and might stimulate her to resume oestrus/mating again.

Pusung was the brother of the new female 'Puspa' and also Chester's 'Puluh' - their parents Atjeh(m) & Puan(f) at Perth had a very successful breeding record.

No nothing to apologise about :). There are only 4 hybrids in total in Australia (Jantan and Willow at Taronga and the mother/daughter pair at Melbourne) and once these pass on it will provide more room for pure Sumatrans so maybe new bloodlines will be able to be introduced into the Aussie bloodlines.

Hi urmumzagoat, have you seen these recently at Taronga?

Nope, but I am going next weekend. Unfortunately tho, they are off-display as the chimps are in their exhibit while the chimp exhibit is still being renovated but in a few months it will be finished and chimps moved and orangs back onto display.
