Any idea whether other European zoos will enter into this Philippine endemic breeding programme?

The project of Africarium is in progress, in couple of weeks they will choose the company that build whole constuction and it should be ready not later than 2013.
Few days ago they finished also the 4 aviaries of Asiatic birds, the inhabitants are:
  • Himalayan monal Lophophorus impejanus
  • great argus Argusianus argus
  • Reeves's pheasant Syrmaticus reevesii
  • Satyr tragopan Tragopan satyra
  • mandarin duck Aix galericulata
  • Baikal teal Anas formosa - new species to the zoo

They finished as well the Sahara House, except scimitar oryx and fennec fox today there are 3 terraria for
  • greater Egyptian jerboa Jaculus orientalis - first time in exposition
  • Savigny's agama Trapelus savignii
  • yellow fan-fingered gecko Ptyodactylus hasselquistii - new species to the zoo
  • Bell's dab lizard Uromastyx acanthinura
  • savannah monitor Varanus exanthematicus
  • migratory locust Locusta migratora
  • desert locust Schistocerca gregaria

Thanks M...k!

Where is the Sahara house located? is it converted from some earlier house and which one?

Zoo website announced that male pygmy hippo was born on 18. August. Sire is Carlos from Paris, dam is Elpunia. Last year's female youngster, Psotka, is about to leave Wroclaw.

Sahara House was built at the place of former building (so called White House), where the camels, donkey and goats used to stay in winter. Enclosures were reaaranged as well. I'll try to put here some new photos tonight. The building was finished last year except of these terraria.

Would appreciate any photos of the renovations and new exhibits at Wroclaw Zoo! Thanx :D

The zoo has received 1.2 reticulated giraffe, 1.0 from Nuremburg and 0.2 from Frankfurt, these are the only reticulated giraffe in Poland.
There is a mistake, all of them are females, male arrived half a year earlier from Copenhagen so since the end of 2009 we have 1.3.
The reconstruction of former giraffe house has to start this year, because our new rhinos born last year (I don't remember where) and next year their new house has to be ready. Their neighbors will be some Indian squirrels, Indian muntjacs as well as grey langurs. The next step (in few years) will be the reconstruction of adjoining zebra house for malayan tapirs.
This year will start also a construction of new exposure called "Odrarium", the enclosures for some animals living in the Odra river. It'll consist of 4 water basins: headwaters (with waterfall), middle reaches (with enclosure of wels catfish Silurus glanis), oxbow lake (with exposure of European pond turtle Emys orbicularis) as well as the mouth of the river (with tiding salty water). Everything will be covered with an aviary.

I suppose your GOH rhinos born last year there is not a big choice of zoos around (particularly on the cows)!

What other species will go into the Odrarium (apart from European pond turtles and catfish)? This seems like an interesting project to invest in native species and awareness!

Kifaru where can I find some actual news to check where the rhinos were born? This year we expect also arrival of cheetahs A. j. soemmeringi, they will get the exhibit of gnou (they will leave and it'll be reconstructed).
The animals of Odrarium are in majority fish and birds.
I do not remeber what exactly ahould live there, The first part is called "land of trout and grayling" so probably these species at least. In the last part (with salty water and tides) there will be some waders e.g. oyster catchers. That's all what I know at that moment.

If I good remember: rhino male should came from CERZA Lisieux and female from Berlin Tierpark.
Another balabac mouse deer was born.

@Arek
Any chance of new imports from the Philippines since the stock sent to the UK did not survive? The founder base right now is a little on the small side.

It's necessary, but I don't know if possible in the nearest future.

Your current director has some excellent contacts in the region and having worked in S.E. Asia too. So, I expect it to be in good hands. I just prefer next time some Continental zoos will participate in the import (we have a lot of experience with the more common mouse deer).

I agree now that continental collections should concentrate on the Balabac mouse deer, but UK zoos do have experience with the common species, so much so that Singapore sent a much needed new animals to Edinburgh zoo.

@kiang
Thanks.
I know Edinburgh is faithful participant of the EEP. The EEP was actually in place not being an endangered species, but for import regulations sake almost nearly impossible to accomplish from the S.E. Asian realm.
Cannot say anymore than that I am afraid.
Pm me if you like.

On Polish Zoo Forum someone from Wroclaw Zoo (I presume that is director Ratajszczak himself) wrote that now is much harder receive new mouse deer from Philippines because of new vet regulations. Also he wrote that is ready list of zoos waiting for balabacs from Wroclaw and/or Philippines: Praha, Rotterdam, Chester and Leipzig.
