African elephant news/births 2010-2011

Wow, Sdudla has been there for quite sometime! Do you think they are (possibly) transfering Tamani because one or more of the females at LPZ are pregnant with Sdudla's offspring?

@Loxodonta- That would be a truly impressive exhibit! Why did LPZ not do it?

Thank you for the information, DallasPachyderm.

Do you have information regarding Asian elephant news as well?

Money and time. Most of that African section was thrown together rather quickly because the elephants and rhinos came in and they wanted to get them out on display. The zoo plans on re-doing the entire Africa section, including Ituri Forest and the Safari ride, in the future. It is unlikly the mix exhibit will happen because it was one of Lex's ideas but you never know.

5 year old male calf Thabo-Umasai planned to arrive from Dresden Zoo in Germany to Birmingham in May.

Amazing news! Hopefully he will get along with Bulwagi, Ajani, and Callee(?)

Any other imports this year that you know of?

I appreciate you including our enclosure in 2011, but it will not quite make it. January 2012 is construction completion. Not sure how long it will take to open after that (have to move in the SDSP elephants and introduce our african to them and get everyone used to the new exhibit). I would guess (and this is just a guess) looking at a March 2012 opening for the general public.

If the zoo plans to introduce their current African cow to the new herd, what is the plans for the Asian?

Callee arrived at the Birmingham Zoo from Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Well, I wasn't allowed to say before, but now we have been told it is ok to tell people if they ask. Also, the curator publicly announced it at a meeting of zoo supporters.

Our asian elephant Connie will move to the San Diego Zoo and our african elephant Shaba will stay and be integrated into the small herd coming here from San Diego Safari Park.

From the beginning my gut feeling was that Connie would be moved to the SD Zoo, but I would rather see Connie moved to Denver or even DC.

African female Ruby at Pat Derby's private facility passed away in late March. The location claims she was 50 years old, but zoo records indicate she was in her early-40s. Derby also claims three years in the circus and several transfers led her to death. She only resided at the California facility for four years prior to her passing.

Caldwell Zoo elephant dies over weekend | KETK

Bull elephant "Chico" dies. He was the largest elephant in North America. As well as the oldest bull, at 46.

He is survived by daughter Moja, and his two grand-daughters Victoria, and Zuri

I was hoping he would be further represented in the population :(

I'm assuming his genetics (semen) was stored in the frozen zoo in San Diego, does anyone know if this is true? Could his sperm be used on the elephants at the SDSP?
