Zoochat awards

So I proposed the idea in the congratulations Pertinax thread, what do people think about the idea of community awards on zoochat. i think:
1) reinforce the community aspect of the site
2) promote high standards across the site.

would you like to see this?

what catgeories do people think there should be? what criteria for each? etc etc

any other suggestions?
please no nominations for awards, id rather this thought out properly for ages than it be rushed and pants.

(if this becomes famous im am SOO taking credit ;) )
 
I don't know whether in operation this will prove fame-making, but it is a terrific and constructive suggestion.

Given some of the recent brush fires, I'd suggest adding "Most Promising Forum Member under the age of 18" (or somewhere around there.)

Happily, I am not eligible :p
 
Maybe most informative member for animals, and one for zoos, as well as maybe best photographer. Another idea would be to split this into completly seperate ones for The US, Europe, Oceania, and Other.

Clearly not fame making (i was joking). Firstly thank you, secondly I would be against using age as a criteria as this information doesnt have to be disclosed and it is up to the members whether they want this known. I would say most promising new member would be a better category.

I would suggest:

Best thread
Outstanding contribution to zoochat
Best photograph
Best photographer
Most promising new member
best contributor, North america
Best contributor Europe
Best contributor Asia
etc
Best member name (a silly but fun one)

I would also suggest this is voted for by moderators, rather than all members. I think this means the results wont be known until they are announced, but nominations should be from the general members.
 
First, I think best photograph would be a nearly imossible task. Second, there are so few moderators, that that would probably not work. Also, split contributions into categories for zoos, and animals, because some members have been to tons of zoos, but don't know nearly as much about animals as other members and vice versa. But everything else is imo a good idea.

I must disagreee, often the best contributions come from ideas and sensible thinking rather than just a mastery of zoo knowledge (however clearly this helps). I dont feel the contirbution awards are a measure of knowledge but a measure of personality, thinking and style.

plus I think that splitting them into animals and zoos would be way to complicated.

In terms of moderators i feel like they are a select panel with a unique position to make clear decisions. I dont think it would take much time.
 
Just had a thought to make it more than just a post, i think the recipient should have the ward built into their statistics, either down the side of their name e.g. foz voted best zoochat photographer 2011 ;)

(i wish! seriously has anyone seen my photo skills! i can barely turn on a camera let alone take a picture of anything other than a blur)

Also I think it a little memo or advertisement-sort-of-thing (very technical name) of up and coming awards could be built into the panel at the top to make it well known to the whole site.

Outstanding contribuation must go to Pertinax i mean come on over 11,000 posts!
 
I must suggest that we get the backing of the the site's team (Sim + moderators) first and also determine a format prior to suggesting nominations
