Kolmården Zoo Kolmården Zoo

Kolmarden have the best dolphin show in the world , toddy.
You dont like Kolmarden fore the dolphins. What hapend
of Copenhagen will have Dolphins???:D

Kolmarden certinely dont have the best dolpin show in the world. I agree with Toddy, its a big circus the whole thing. Have they stopped with that stupid thing with having some "lucky" kid being dragged in a small boat?

I have been to Kolmarden MANY times, I even lived 10km outside Kolmorden itself for a few years, yet I have only watched the dolpin show once, just to see what it was like, a big disapointment.

I wish Kolmorden would close down their "dolfinarium", at least stop breeding them. I have never understood the point of having animals such as dolphins or whales in captivity.

I visited Kolmården in the summer 2006, and there was no "lucky kid" there. I saw that in Duisburg Zoo this summer however :(

I think that it is possible to keep whales (the smaller ones), if you give them plenty of room and activities. And I dont' think that the dolphins in Kolmården are unhappy with their shows. They get treats for doing almost nothing. It just gives the visitors a wrong impression of what a zoo is supposed to be, and shows dolphins as circus animals, instead of the natural wonders they are.

Swedish zoofans,

By what character would you define the Kolmarden Zoo. Is it an Eurasian wildlife zoo (like most Swedish zoos with lots of native species) or is it African oriented (with this savannah thingy and rhinos)?

How is the breeding programme for white rhinos and Asian elephants gearing up? I heard last year Kolmarden received a new young bull. What is his story?

On the Asian elephants. They currently have only 2 young cows from Thailand. When and/or is a bull elephant to be introduced soon? Do they plan on bringing in another more experienced matriach in to chaperonne the young females into adulthood (and hopefully an era with new calves - as the old herd under Brahma had just started doing before the unfortunate TB demise ...)?

Looking forward to your news!

Currently Kolmarden has 0.3 asian elephants, female Saba from Le Pal/France joined the herd recently. Rumors are that they will get the experienced breeding bull "Calvin" from Hannover/Germany soon. I`d really like to know if Saba is coming along with the 2 young females, so any information on that would be appreciated.

Kolmården is sort of a mixture between the two types. It has a large section of native animals, but also more exoctic species than most European zoos. Africa and Asia are equally representated in the Djurpark (zoo) part. The safaripark is a mix between Scandinavian and African species, with two Scandinavian sections and three African sections. The reason they have a lot of African animals, is because of their large savannah areas.

Thanx Yassa,

But what I cannot grasp is .. Is not Calvin just come on form breedingwise? He has only sired 3 offspring so far (2 with Khaing Hnin Hnin with 1 on the way in 2008 and 1 with Manari).

I recently overheard Calvin has bred to both Manari and Sayang in the autumn of 2007 (though results have not come through). But I think it is way too early to send him off to another zoo. Both Manari and Sayang need to be represented by 2 calves each before he should be sent on? Don't you agree?

Happy New Year,

Jelle

I agree that it would make more sense for Hannover to keep him for now until Manari and Sayang are confirmed to be pregnant. I can only guess why they want to send him away now... he has a very bad leg, is limping strongly and swaying a lot. And lost some weight.

Gorillas at Kolmarden

Is it known for sure which male at the zoo is the father of the gorilla baby 'Enzo' ? I think its possibe it could have been either silverback 'Efata' or blackback 'Nasibu.' Was a DNA test ever done to establish 100% paternity?

Is the mother 'Naomi' or the other older female pregnant at this time?

Hi, it would be great if you could find our if the new elephant Saba is coming along with the 2 resident females and when they will finally aquire a bull. Thanks!

Yup, I second that.

Please find out for us when bull Maxim (Is that deal still on?) or so will come to Kolmarden Zoo?

For those interested in the new "Marin World" Kolmården is building, I have bad news. It will focus on restaurants and design around the exhibits. Nothing will be done with the exhibits themselvs.

Kolmården really needs to get their priorities staight, and decide if they want to be a zoo or a circus. They have some good enclosures, and the potential to become a great zoo, so I don't know what's going through the zoo-management's heads on this one...?

Hmm, thats really disapointing. They hardly need any more resturants.

They have plenty of space to build many new encloasers/exhibits. But there seems to be little interest in increasing the collection, the fact that it takes 10-15min to even gets to the first encloasers speaks for itself, were the lynx are kept and you rarely see any of these anyway, and I cant say that I find roe deers to be that interesting.

There is so much unused land in the grounds of Kolmården.

They have brought in very few intreresting species in the last years. Their bird collection is just patethic, I could walk into a pet store and almost see a larger diversity of birds. And they surely could do much to improve their mammal collection as well

They have eagles, vultures and several species of parrot but none of these is kept on public display. Las time I was there they only birds I saw was the Flamingos, 2 ara parrots and some crowned cranes in the African savannah. I have been behind the scenes in Kolmården many times and sadly they keep very few birds even there.

and I cant say that I find roe deers to be that interesting.

Actually, they are Peré David's deers, so they are a bit more exciting :p

But you are right, they have very few birds, and I can't think of any reptiles that they keep...?

And even their mammal collection are not very impressive. It's a real shame, since they are placed in a beautiful setting with lots of room for expantion of the enclosures and the building of new ones.

Well, its good news that they have replaced the roe deers. Its a few years ago since I last visited Kolmården but from what I recall the old roe deer encloaser is small, isnt it? I saw two Peré David's deers being kept in a encloaser outside the zoo on my last visit, two females I think.

There is a tropicarium just outside Kolmården which has a really good fish and reptile collection, and some really nice exhibits.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Tropicarium. It quite a nice, small exhibition, but it's very expensive if you want to visit the Tropicarium, the zoo and the safaripark, since they all have seperate entrances and ticketprices :(

According to ISIS, Kolmården keeps 1.4 Peré David's deers and I don't recall their enclosure as being too small.
