Shepreth's 13 year old female puma, Demelza, was put down recently (our local paper didn't give an exact date but it was in this week's edition) after the return of a 'deadly toothache', which was discovered during a routine vet inspection. She also had a nasty infected paw and the vet advised that she may not recover from further surgery.

She'd been at the park for more than 10 years after being abandonned by a private owner.

The park has one remaining puma - Tyge.

I would have thought it was quite uncommon as it's unusual for a animal like a mara to appear on national news. Think about how many times whipsnade has a mara birth.
 
it isn't unusual. Litter size in mara is usually one to three babies.

It struck me on my recent visit that Shepreth has a fair number of species, not seen in many other collections in the east/south east of the country: puma, maned wolf, cusimanse, potteroo, crab eating macaque, vervet monkey, pine marten(even raccoons & red fox aren't seen in many zoos in the area), the armadillo will be another good addition to the list
 
After visiting yesterday I was told by the keeper that the large hairy armadillos are actually 2 males, however I know armadillos can be quite hard to sex.

The hedgehog hospital has now been built and has been running science November, they had lots of youngsters and a few adults one of which had a very wonky nose bless it!

They have also built a very large education centre which if all goes to to plan will in my opinion be one of the best in the UK.

They are in the tropical house, just to the right as you enter the main part of the building. They were labelled when i went 2 weeks ago, but i didn't actually see them.
 
As pipaluk says, they are on your right as you enter the tropical house, they spend most of their time in the nest box but you can peek inside if you crouch down and look through the glass or just wait until the talk at 12.30 and they will lift the lid off the nest so all can see them! Loi
 
Not really news, but whilst visitin at the weekend, i noticed Shepreth have ceased the labelling as Bengal tiger. The individual name signs have the words painted over and the new species signs are simply 'Tiger'.

Didn't see the armadillo- again!
