Hyena exhibits are finished. Lots of vegetation but not extremely naturalistic - you can see concrete in moat/pool etc.

Tierpark has a problem now with direction how redevelop and raise attendance - it gets maybe 3 times less visitors than zoo (even in Knut-less years). It has potential of few zoos on the world, with so much space. Wonder how it will be done. Maybe German zoolovers are more up to date.

Yeah, the Spotted Hyenas (1,1 with one cub) an the Asian Wilddogs had mooved into their new exhibits. Nothig special, but still better than the old ones.
On the old exhibit of the Spotted Hyenas is now the male striped Hyena, ´cause the female have cubs. So the brow hyenas are still sitting ducks in the Brehmhaus...

I am very glad to hear that the dholes received a new area. At least you have an exhibit for them, in the US there are None on exhibit. Probably 10 or more years ago San Diego , Oklahoma, Miami, all had dholes on exhibit, but no longer. San Diego is hoping to build an new exhibit for them in the future, ( they are working with them in secluded off exhibit areas and have had some breeding success ) not sure if it will be at the Zoo or Animal Park, and the Wilds in Ohio has a new conservation area for medium sized carnivores and they plan to add dholes but I haven't heard when that will occur.

Glad to hear the striped hyenas are so prolific, when I was there about 2 years ago, she had a litter then also.

According to EAZA, the tierpark are due to receive a batchelor group of yellow footed rock wallaby from Besancon in France soon.

This is the only zoo I have ever been to that has the potential to build a really awesome geographical oriented zoo, and they wouldn't have to take animals out of the collection. It's not that hard to build a series of african paddocks and make it look like it's one exhibit, just as an example. I understand that that small castle and it's gardens are meant to be untouched, but it's too bad that it's such a waste of space. I go to a zoo for animals, not for cultural-historical facets ( unless these facets are related to the zoo itself).

Just to return to original subject;

When I visited both zoos in March 2009, the Baird's tapir was at Berlin zoo. Don't remember any tapirs at the Tierpark?

Dx

Chico, the bairds tapir, moved from Tierpark to Zoo Berlin in 2009. He was the only tapir in TP Berlin.

I honestly think they CAN do both. Those historical buildings and grounds are part of what makes this zoo unique.

A male ratel has arrived from Prague, and 2.1 golden takin have also arrived from Liberec zoo.

I would hope Tierpark Berlin can source more unrelated takins of all 3 ssp. from China or S.E. Asia (where Mishmis are concerned). Traditionally they have had good relations to Eastern European, Russian and Chinese zoo professionals.

For really genetically well balanced takin breeding programmes at least 15 new founders per ssp. are required in all 3 (realistic or not this may be). P.R. of China is very well geared towards both Sichuans and goldens ...

Hi

Zootierliste is telling me that Berlin Tierpark has received a male Asiatic Lion from Helsinki - does anyone know anything about this?

The arrival of the new male lion was also mentioned on the German forum tiergarten.com. I tried to find some information about the transfer on the website of Tierpark Berlin, but unfortunately there is no statement about this matter. :(

A few notes of note for the new year.

0.1 North China leopard born on 07/01/11

2.0 East African aardwolf (Proteles cristatus septentrionalis) arrived from RSCC.

2.2 Asian brown tortoise arrived from Löbbecke Museum & Aquazoo Dusseldorf.

0.0.5 Scheltopusiks from Chomutov

0.0.4 American white pelican from San Diego.

...and bang goes the UK's European Aardwolf monopoly! :D

Nice to see some more American pellies coming in, as well.

EDIT: This does mean Tierpark Berlin have a full house of hyaenids now though, which is mighty impressive.

I'm guessing that Tierpark Berlin is the only place you can actually see all 4 types of hyeana?

(Aardwolf, Brown, Striped and Spotted?)

Ha, my edit crossed with your post, MT. :)

An affectionate statement: I love that place! I almost curse myself for not having been since 2004 but I sincerely do hope to return this year!
