Did you actually see Loja? - if so I'd say she either wasn't pregnant or that she 'lost' the cub(s).

I didn't see her.

The presenters now give a daily talk with all the zoo news at the main entrance at 10am. A strange time to pick since the zoo does not open until then.

That's probably because on busy days quieus start to build up at the paydesks before it opens. I've seen them starting to form at 9.30 a.m.

They let people in around 9:30 now to try and stop queues forming, but with access to just the entrance area.

So there would be probably plenty of people to keep busy while they can't explore the rest of the zoo.

Regarding the cheetahs: once again the North African cheetahs are to be imported from UAE. I do not know of EEP northern cheetah inside Saudi.

I wonder where this confusion is coming from regarding their current location? I was told it wasn't an arab state

I've always found it rather irritating Chester don't open earlier than 10a.m. Many other zoos manage to be open at 9 a.m and there is so much to see at Chester, that extra hour would be very valuable...

I agree, they also close pretty early too. I remember about ten years ago leaving the zoo in July and August around 7pm, and visitors were still walking about.

There does seem to be a trend towards shorter opening hours in some zoos. Although I said some are open at 9 a.m. its less than used to be. Its very frustrating if you turn up somewhere early for a full day's visit and can't get in- Chester is the main place this happens to me because I've usually stayed overnight closeby before a visit...

It has just been confirmed on today's Zoo Days that Loja was not pregnant. Bear cubs for 2009 then?

The Jaguars have bred twice, if i recall correctly (once with the new animals, once with the original jags) however both litters DNS. It is a real shame that the zoo pumped so much money into the jaguar exhibit (with assistance from the car company) and there have been no real results to show for it.

As for the bears, i'm quietly confident that Chester will see cubs soon...

Bongorob, regarding the Bongos, when you spoke to the keeper did you get any indication as to where the new exhibit may go?
The only place i can think of is for them to go into the current buffalo paddock and the buffalo to move into the paddock which is currently being used by the babirusa, once they move back to the cattle house.

No, I was going to ask him but someone else was waiting to talk to him. I'll try and find out something on my next visit.

I don't know if its been mentioned yet, but the baby Sumatran Orang turned out to be a female who is named Indah.

The zoos new site has improved on the news section. It lists the arrival of the new okapi and the birth of babirusa, not to mention the sumatran Orang birth.

Visited the zoo yesterday none of the new exhibits completed yet but would say the Crocs and Cheetahs will be ready for may bank holiday weekend, the young Red-crowned Crane is still on the site of the Buttterfly House and their is no sign of the African Aviary been stated by the Rhino`s,although it is now marked on the new maps the zoo hands out its on the site of the bird holding pens and its marked by a Hoopoe!Saw both of the Indian Rhinos in the back paddock, and finally walked over the part of the new bridge that was opened nice to see the Anoa viewing area but must say in summer with the leaves on the trees unless they are right at the front of the bridge their is no chance of seeing them.

Its not been stated what species of bird are going in the aviary, but the zoo is getting a pair of Southern Ground Hornbills, they have a load of Village Weavers in 2 seperate aviarys within the zoo,so theirs my best guess for starters.
Sorry writhedhornbill not got a copy of the map, also in shows the location for the Butterfly House on it.

Updates as of today:

- top story - work has finally started on clearing the old Maned Wolf paddock ready for the butterfly house - a team were in there today with a small digger and a woodchipper doing sterling work.
- Philippine Croc and Cheetah exhibits progressing but still a little way off. New bridge is getting there - about 3-quarters done and half-open now.
- managed to spot four tiny Mallorcan Midwife Toadlets in the old Tuatara building alongside the usual huge tadpoles.
- amphibian exhibition in the Joseph Banks Room has Dyeing and Golfodulcean Poison Arrow Frogs, Red-eyed Tree Frogs and Rio Cauca Caecilian (Typhlonectes natans)
- according to the presenter's talk I half-caught while passing, the female sealion(s?) is(are) moving on; the male Fernandez will stay and be joined by new females.
- Patna and Baatschii on display together and getting along fine (no sign of deer or Blackbuck though).
- no work as yet started on African aviaries - according to the new map leaflet there will be two new aviaries - the ground hornbill one (shown on the map on the corner of the Lechwe paddock) and a walk-through (seemingly on the duck holding pens). Walk-through does indeed have a cartoon hoopoe on the map; the leaflet says it will also house Lilac-breasted Roller and (interestingly) Southern Bald Ibis.
- few other interesting tidbits form the new map; it discusses 'three major developments' for this year but these are Cheetah, Croc and African Aviary - not Butterfly House. The Butterflies are shown on the map as coming 'Late 2008'; the Cheetahs 'Summer 2008'. Crocs are shown on the map as if already present, as are the African aviaries.
- the old Victoria cichlid tank in the Aquarium is now an aqua-terrarium for Chinese Three-striped Box Turtle (Cuora trifasciata) - though I didn't see them.
- Flower Mantis in RotRA replaced by Dead Leaf Mantis (Deroplatys desiccata) - given the short lifespan of these animals I guess the species may change quite a bit.
- And Margaret the giraffe really is very small but looks healthy.

Think that's all - I'll be through again later if I think of anything more!

That sounds great!

I really hope that the zoo are getting Southern bald ibis, and that if they do, they have similar success with them as with their northern bald ibis!!
